Who is Hawksley Workman?

Hawksley Workman is singer and songwriter. Performer, producer, poet, and playwright. Multi-instrumentalist and an ambitious, ever-busy global ambassador of Canadian culture and creativity. A staple of the Canadian music scene for over 17 years, Workman boasts a catalogue of 16 solo releases. The accolades amassed include Canadian music awards and widespread critical acclaim. He has most recently published a children’s book for Penguin Random House, based on the lyrics of his beloved Christmas song Almost a Full Moon.

Hawksley is looking forward to bringing his one man wine-soaked rock and roll cabaret, The God That Comes, to Tasmania. He's visited our island state before. In 2009 he played a blistering set of his indy rock music to an adoring crowd at the Republic Bar as part of MONA FOMA and won over many new fans.

He’ll win over plenty of new fans during Festival 2017 when he plays in Devonport and Hobart.

BABEL

This live performance of sound and expression is shaping up to be one of the picks of Ten Days on the Festival 2017, especially after the amazing preview performance at our program launch late last year. Feedback from the arts community, Festival partners and friends was that it was an experience that profoundly resonated with the audience in ways they didn’t expect.

Babel will immerse you in many of the languages spoken in Tasmania other than English. The performance evokes contemplation and conversation about language and how it feels to be in a place where you do not understand what is being said.

Creator Glen Murray, composer Heath Brown and lighting designer Jason James present an aural experience like no other. Embracing, confronting and tender, this work is about language and humanity.

City of Hobart has partnered with the Festival to provide an intriguing performance space on the fifth floor of the council building, giving audiences a chance to engage with an environment typically unavailable to the general public.

e-baby

Catherine, 45, an Australian expat living in London, has everything - a husband, a career and an international life, everything except a child.

In a desperate attempt to fulfill her dream of motherhood, she hires Nellie, a working mother of two and first-time surrogate, living in the surrogacy-friendly state of Massachusetts in the US.

As they share the highs and lows of pregnancy, we get to know two very different women, both of whom have underestimated the emotional impact of the path they have chosen.

Funny, touching and important, e-baby is written by writer and journalist Jane Cafarella. Jane has created an enthralling story about love, obsession and entitlement. Written with humour and compassion, e-baby comes to Hobart after successful seasons in Melbourne and Sydney.

Starring Jane Longhurst and Katie Robertson, e-baby brings together two of Tasmania's finest actors for the first time in a poignant and powerful story not to be missed!
