In June 1917, at Messines, Belgium, the detonation of 19 mines resulted in a staggering 10,000 German casualties before the battle even began. The 1st Australian Tunnelling Company was responsible for firing the mines at the northern end, beneath the enemy’s trenches. Hood was killed, with three other soldiers, on 31 October 1917, when a shell hit the cookhouse near the Menin-Ypres road in Belgium. Aged 43, he left a wife and eight children to mourn his death at their home Strachur, 109 Rochester Street Homebush. |
