Council has been awarded a Highly Commended for its work in sediment and erosion control. The award is part of the Excellence in the Environment Awards, organised by Local Government NSW, and recognises Council’s contribution to the Get the Site Right campaign. Earlier this year, Strathfield Council partnered up with neighbouring Councils and the NSW Environment Protection Authority in a sediment and erosion control blitz at construction sites across the Parramatta River Catchment. The campaign saw Council’s team execute 76 inspections as well as educating companies on the importance of erosion control. To learn more about how you can be responsible on site, pick up one of our Erosion and Sediment Control Guidelines at Customer Service. Also, stay tuned for the next blitz on Tuesday 21 November. Strathfield Council has adopted the NSW Food Authority’s Scores on Doors program, a system of rating food premises on their hygiene and food safety. Keep a look out for businesses displaying their Scores on Doors rating when dining around Strathfield LGA. Council Environmental Health Officers will continue working towards every food store being 5 stars and have developed a food safety training program which will roll out in the coming months. Strathfield Council is supporting Share the Dignity #itsinthebag campaign which addresses the needs of women living on the street, and in sheltered or crisis accommodation. Council encourages all local residents to participate by donating a handbag, new or in good condition, filled with female essential and/or luxury items. When: Saturday 11 November 2017, sunset Tony Karamaneas – Works Team LeaderI have worked in the construction field for 30 years, with 16 of those years at Strathfield Council providing quality works projects within the LGA. As a Team Leader I enjoy guiding and training staff to improve and further develop their skills. I help deliver a number of engineering projects, including construction and maintenance of footpaths, drains, roads, kerbs and gutters. In addition to this I also assist with Emergency Services, which often involves being available during after work hours. Another area our team manages is illegal dumping, something which is unfortunately becoming an increasing problem in Strathfield. You can help us manage illegal dumping by reporting incidences to Council’s Customer Service Centre on 9748 9999. Yard debris such as leaves, shrubbery trimmings and grass clippings are a significant source of stormwater pollution and when blown into the street it can clog storm drains and cause flooding issues. Leaf litter costs the Council thousands of dollars each year in street sweeping and maintenance of stormwater systems and causing leaf litter or other garden pollutants to enter the waterways can attract a fine of up to $4,000. You can help reduce water pollution and save ratepayers money by: Find out more about how you can help protect our waterways here. Make this National Recycling Week count, by doing the right thing! Strathfield Post OfficeBefore the Post Office was located in Strathfield Plaza, the first Post Office was built on the corner of Redmyre Road and The Boulevarde in 1910. There were three Post Office buildings on that site as the building was rebuilt twice before the Post Office was moved to its current location. Image and words courtesy of Cathy Jones.
