Dear member,
Have you ever wondered what medical simulation can do for your innovation? Our team visited the Centre for Advanced Medical Simulation at NAIT recently, and learnt about their cool simulation labs, advanced equipment and life-like models that can respond to questions and deliver a baby! Some of our companies have already received some great support from them. I will highly encourage you to check out NAIT CAMS, or reach out to healthub@ualberta.ca and we will be happy to assist you. As Sushmitha, this week’s Meet Our Community member, mentions, “joining the Health Innovation Hub made everything possible, it connected us to amazing mentors, and community and provided lots of resources catered for student entrepreneurs”. We are here to help you and your business, just as we helped Sushmitha and her co-founders with InstaSerum.
We are very excited to welcome 8Bit Cortex to the HIH. Their cool gamified technology helps companies to manage workplace wellness and prevent employee burnout. Check them out to assess if your workplace is happy, healthy and productive. Also, don’t forget to check out the job board. Both Panthera CryoSolutions and Entos Pharmaceuticals are hiring, so if you know anyone who would love to work in a forward-thinking health innovation company, please share these exciting positions with them.

We had the opportunity to tour the space and learn more about the Centre for Advanced Medical Simulation this month. Its mission is to transform patient care through medical simulation, education, technology & applied research.

Our member, Nanostics Inc. announced positive data from a pre-biopsy clinical validation study of its ClarityDX Prostate® test designed to improve the accuracy of detecting clinically significant prostate cancer in men that are at risk of the disease.
New Member at the Hub - 8BIT Cortex
8BIT Cortex has gamified corporate burnout risk assessments and is building predictive analytics to manage burnout before it becomes a problem. They aim to make the culture of workplace wellness data-driven and fun.

Business Development Manager at InstaSerum
1. What does health innovation/ innovation in health mean to you?
Innovation is not just new ideas/technologies in the space, it's also Improvement. To me, innovation in health means providing improved, efficient, effective, optimized services/technologies to meet the current needs.
2. In your opinion, what is the state of the health innovation ecosystem in Alberta, Canada and globally?
There is a lot of scope for health innovation in Alberta right now. Alberta's new $6M investment for lab innovations, opens up a lot of opportunities for innovators. But health innovation is a slow adoption, it takes years to adopt a new service/technology, it's important to provide innovators with the right resources to overcome the barriers faced in the healthcare innovation space.
3. What motivated you to join the Health Innovation Hub?
Being an engineer with a vision to contribute to healthcare innovation, it was crucial for our team to have access to mentors, and the right resources and be well connected with the health community. Joining the Health Innovation Hub made everything possible, it connected us to amazing mentors, and community and provided lots of resources catered for student entrepreneurs.
4. How would you describe yourself in one sentence?
I am an inquisitive engineer who tries to find an innovative solution to every difficult problem.
5. What is the one thing that you are most excited about right now?
Being a first-time entrepreneur, I am really excited to be able to work in the health innovation space and have the opportunity to make a large impact. Looking forward to developing a new technology that will be aligned with the unique needs of the Canadian healthcare system.

NSERC Alliance – Alberta Innovates Advance Program
Individual proposals can request up to $150,000 per year and can be for up to two years in duration. A maximum of $100,000 per year will be provided by Alberta Innovates and NSERC will match the Alberta Innovates contribution at a ratio of 50 % up to a maximum of $50,000 per year.
