Click here Dear Friend of PLC Year 12s - An Opportunity to ReflectAs we celebrate their final week of school with our Year 12 girls and wish them well for the upcoming exams, it provides a wonderful opportunity to reflect, not only on the journey to this point, but what is possible for the future. It is a time which provides a real mix of excitement and energy, tempered with a few butterflies about the unknown. The RSA (Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce) capture perfectly what an education of the head, hand and heart within a supported and innovative learning community works towards achieving. The RSA outline a vision that places a premium on free speech, critical thought and reason, and on research, innovation and invention; all things we feel passionately about as a PLC community. To achieve this, they suggest that we are working towards a learning community made up of:
What we know is that everyone has a creative capacity and it is through the right environment that this capacity is allowed to flourish. We look forward in the coming months to celebrating the girls' accomplishments and wish the 2018 Leavers every success into the future as they prepare for their final exams and life beyond PLC, confident that they are ready to negotiate what lays ahead. This event occurs every year as close as practically possible to International Mental Health Day. This year, our selected theme for the week is ‘Let’s take care of mental health together', promoting a sense of belonging and connectedness amongst our community'. The importance of raising awareness of mental health and wellbeing is clearly illustrated by recent news reports on research from Headspace that revealed high (and rising) levels of psychological distress in young Australians. A recent Mission Australia report identified that mental health was the top issue for young people in Australia. It is no wonder that that government policies across the world identified schools as having a key role to play in early intervention and support for mental health. Schools have an important role in building community and providing opportunities for connectedness that build good mental health. A key protective factor for children is having safe, strong, supportive and respectful relationships - within their family and school. Keeping the above in mind, our Mental Health Week programme has been developed in collaboration with our student leaders. The activities focus on providing opportunities to:

Congratulations to everybody for the spirit in which they competed and to those awarded ribbons and trophies. Baird was the overall Champion House on the day. This programme is an overnight introduction to Outdoor Ed, which builds on last year’s Year 3 sleepover, with the girls taking the next step and going to a campsite located in the Perth region at Pelican Point. Girls will develop their camping skills by putting up their own tent, which they will sleep in for one night with a buddy. They will also experience cooking with a trangia. This programme will give the girls the opportunity to explore the natural environment along the Swan River and experience the fun of Outdoor Education. They will participate in stand-up paddle boarding, a sandcastle competition and other beach and river based activities. Here is a chant that the Year 4 girls wrote to sing at camp!
The Year 3s will also have their first Outdoor Education experience this week, with a sleepover in tents on the grounds of the Junior School. We hope that the weather is kind and that the girls all have an amazing time! Mental Health WeekMental Health Week will be celebrated at PLC next week. Mental Health Week aims to increase mental wellbeing by encouraging each of us to support and look out for one another. It promotes mental health discussions and raises awareness of mental health issues and reduces the stigma of seeking help. Junior School Student Leaders and staff have organised a variety of activities. Some of the fun activities include a flash mob, mindful colouring and craft, and learning to dance the ‘Hucklebuck’. One of the hallmarks of this group has been their cohesiveness, and as they lead into their finale, I am sure this will enable them to stay connected in the years to come. I hope also that they will remain connected with PLC. It was a delight to have former student and debating captain, Alicia McLean, as one of the presenters of a session on Tuesday. Recently arrived back from her studies in Sydney and Melbourne, she jumped at the chance to come ‘home’ to PLC. In the words of John Donne “No man (or woman) is an island, entire of itself; every (wo)man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. I look forward to hearing of our Year 12s' exploits in the future and hope they take comfort in the fact that they are part of something bigger than just themselves – the PLC family.
