Dr Terry Coyne, Director of the Queensland Brain Institute Prof Pankaj Sah and Neurologist Prof Peter Silburn recently travelled to The First People's Hospital in China to assist in establishing a Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) service at the People's Hospital along with a neurosciences research program at the Southern China University of Science & Technology (SUSTEC) in Shenzhen.
This is not the first DBS service Dr Coyne has helped set up, having also been involved in establishing and overseeing DBS surgeries in Adelaide, Perth and Jakarta. He was honoured to be invited to set up this service and program in China and looks forward to welcoming the specialists at the First People’s Hospital to Brisbane next year as they continue their education.
This year Dr Coyne was also a part of the organising committee for the APCN Deep Brain Stimulation Symposium held in November, which brought together leading neuroscientists and clinicians from around the world to discuss the latest in DBS research and technologies.
He has been busy presenting on DBS at a number of education events worldwide this year including the Symposium on Neuromodulation for Movement and Psychiatric Disorders in Stockholm, the World Society of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery Quadrennial Scientific Meeting in Berlin and the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies Congress in Istandbul.
As evidenced by their invitations to speak all around the globe, publications, and requests to visit their practice, Dr Coyne and Prof Silburn are considered to be one of the leading DBS practices in the world.
