Program Helps Seniors Stay Active and Healthy in Their Communities

Family medicine physicians and primary care network teams collaborate to help seniors avoid health crises as they age.

As a family physician with additional training in geriatric medicine, Dr. Marjan Abbasi is experienced dealing with patient crisis. Situations such as an elderly parent not coping well in their own home, the need for an enduring power of attorney to be enacted right away, a request for an immediate personal directive or a request to have a parent’s driver’s license revoked are common in her line of work. Abbasi, a faculty member with the Department of Family Medicine’s Division of Care of the Elderly, often found herself wishing she could have had the opportunity to be more proactive.

Online Signatures

Coming mid-June 2019, U of A research-related required signatures will be collected online. Principal investigators will no longer need to print the following forms and collect physical signatures:

1. New Research Application/Proposal/Project Request
2. Project Amendment Request
3. Over Expenditure Authorization Request
4. Sub-grant Request
5. Agreement Acknowledgement Report

Moving to an online system will save time, ensure consistency and make approvals easy to track.

This year’s theme is “Winds of Change in Research Administration.” Whether you are new to research administration or just want to learn more, RAD is for you. This year’s topics include introduction to research administration and understanding moral rights under Canadian copyright law in an academic context plus much more.

Family Medicine Research Day Call for Abstracts

The Department of Family Medicine Research Day will be held Friday, June 7, 2019 at 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. in the Edmonton Clinic Health Academy (ECHA) room L1 490, University of Alberta.

You are invited to submit an abstract for an oral or poster presentation on research or practice quality improvement projects of relevance to family medicine or primary care.

Abstract submissions from resident, students and researchers are welcome, and can be  downloaded here.

Please email the completed abstract form to olga.szafran@ualberta.ca

The deadline for abstract submissions is May 17, 2019.

NACTRC Grant Development Support Fund

Financial support is available from the Northern Alberta Clinical Trials and Research Centre (NACTRC) for developing applications to highly competitive grant competitions in pillars 2 to 4.
