A Home in the bushOne of the most famous residents of our local area was D’Arcy Wentworth. After falling on hard times in his native Ireland, Wentworth immigrated to New South Wales on the Second Fleet as a ships surgeon. His star rose quickly in the new colony, and he was appointed Principal Surgeon and Chief Magistrate by Governor Macquarie. Wentworth built his estate in Homebush and is credited with naming the area as his “home in the bush”. He is responsible for some of the early landfilling operations and the reclamation of marsh and wetlands in the Homebush Bay area, which began in 1826 and has made the area more suitable for urban living, right up to today.
