Your monthly instructional technology updates

Dr. Nolan's Office Hours

Please join Dr. Nolan on ConferZoom this fall semester

Wednesday afternoons 1:00-3:00

Thursday mornings, 8:00-10:00

Ask your questions about teaching online. You might see your colleagues in her ConferZoom Personal Meeting Room. It’s a great place to meet up and share ideas about teaching online.

Please note, I will not be hosting hours on August 12th or November 11th.

Build An Online Community Within Your Course

You are the most important aspect of the course. Don’t be shy. Make yourself known to your students by using video meeting technology available within Canvas. You can connect in real time with your students during office hours or at the previously scheduled times published in the fall class schedule.  You can pre-record your lectures using these video meeting tools, so students can view them asynchronously.

There are two tools available:

  1. ConferZoom is the Chancellor’s Office instance of the video meeting application, Zoom.
  2. Conferences is the Canvas tool that uses the video meeting application, TheBigBlueButton.

Review this tutorial below to learn more about how the tools work.

Support Your Students in the Online Environment

The District has provided students with a lot of information about our instructional plans for fall 2020. You can help support your online students by contacting them before the class begins and on the first day to tell them:

  • how you will facilitate your class

  • what it takes to be successful in your class

  • What your expectations are for their participation

Proctorio

The Proctorio online test proctoring application has been integrated in Canvas for an extended period of time through Fall 2020. View the recorded COS session below.

Fall 2020 Emergency DE Training

The District is offering three emergency distance education (DE) training workshops again this semester. If you didn’t complete the training over the summer, there are many opportunities to complete them between August 10 and November 10. The workshops are designed to prepare instructors for providing online instruction and be compliant with state and federal regulations. Dr Nolan developed and facilitates the workshops.

Both faculty associations have negotiated with the District for faculty to be compensated for eight (8) hours to complete the three two-hour workshops (including two hours of “homework”).  No timesheets are required. Full-time faculty can choose FLEX instead of cash compensation.

Click on the title of the workshop to view the workshop contents. The dates and times listed below each workshop title indicate the schedule for the synchronous ConferZoom presentations. An email invitation to join each session will be sent each morning prior to the day’s scheduled session.

  3. Canvas integrates with Banner, so your students are automatically added to your class. They will log in through the legally required Student Authentication Process.

  4. Canvas Announcements support instructor-initiated contact with students (a legal requirement).

  5. Canvas Discussions and Collaborations provide a mechanism for students to interact with each other (a legal requirement).

  6. There are many features in Canvas that support making instructional materials accessible for people with disabilities (a legal requirement).

  7. Canvas has a FERPA-compliant grade book.

  8. The Canvas Assignment feature: (a) allows students to submit assignments in various formats (text, file, media, cloud location). (b) allows you to attach rubrics to assignments to save you time on grading. (c) includes a comment box for your insightful comments about student work

  9. The Canvas Quiz feature includes elements for objective and essay exams supported by online proctoring software

Canvas Studio

Canvas Studio is a communication tool that allows instructors and students to actively collaborate through video and audio media.

Canvas Studio is "live" in our instance of Canvas right now, so you can take a look at it and try it out. The Canvas Guide for Studio provides a lot of useful information about it, but stay tuned for information about training opportunities.
