Resume vs. CV

You find the perfect position - great experience, an awesome facility and the employers actually look (dare I say) friendly?!  But now the dreaded - "email your CV to position@animalhospital.com" is your next step.  "What??," You ask yourself "A CV?!? Maybe I can just use what I applied to vet school with…"  After a quick glance at your VMCAS resume you decide this is not a valid option, at least not if you want the position.  So now, what do you do?

  1. Determine what they really want.  Many requests for a CV aren't really requests for CVs.  Many potential employers want to provide you the opportunity to list all your relevant experiences and sometimes, realistically, these will not all fit on one page.  Some use the term 'CV' to indicate the document can be more than one page.  Others have a CV themselves and are relying on their own personal experience to also request CVs from current students or recent grads.  Determine what the position is looking for and develop your document to reflect this, ask your career counselor and others you trust in the field.  Many new grads do not have enough experience or time under their belt to have a well developed CV document; sometimes a hybrid is applicable.
  2. Create/Edit the document.  Once you decided on what would be the best document to submit, it is time to start crafting the document.  Feel free to use and edit previous documents, but avoid any tricky templates or heavily edited documents.  If a single space offsets the whole document, it's going to be more trouble than it is worth - consider copying and pasting as "keep text only" into a new word document.  Many will have a 'master copy' of their resume or CV that includes an exhaustive list of all experiences and add to this as time passes.  For each position, cut out the irrelevant information, do a little moving around and 'Save As' for your customized document for each position.
  3. Review, review, review.  Check out the UF CVM Careers Resources on application documents (resume, bullet points, CV, Have MULTIPLE people review the document.  Schedule an appointment with your career advisor to review as well.  The more the merrier, you don't want a silly typo to prevent you from getting this amazing position.
  4. Save as a PDF and email off with a short email about your interest in the position,  what you are looking forward to contributing, and why this place is perfect for you.
  5. Review your progress. Check in on your application after an appropriate time period, move on to the interview process or review and evaluate why you did make it to the next step. Meet with your career advisor to de-brief and determine next steps moving forward.

**Remember - these are generalizations and your situation may be unique or different.  Consult with your career counselor and your mentors in the field to determine what makes the most sense for you and your career goals.
