June newsletter

It’s shaping up to be a sizzling summer, but before you put on the sun-block and roll out the beach mat, take a look at something even hotter: our latest newsletter. This month we’re all about keywords (when to use them) and bullet points (when to lose them), as well as all the latest news from planet Step.

Ciao for now,

Mr S. Internet

Beware the bullet point (and other keyword tips)

All things eventually go out of fashion. Hula hoops… Tamagotchis… Liberal Democrats. And now it’s the turn of bullet pointed keyword lists to be thrown into the dustbin of history.

Back in the day, it seemed like a perfectly good idea to list your products and services in a bullet point list on your website. Less is more, and all that. But nowadays, for those extra Google brownie points, your content will need to be detailed, informed, accurate, well-written, and not simply stuffed with keywords.

Ultimately, keywords are designed for search engines; Google’s objective is to ensure web users can find the most relevant site according to their search query. As Google becomes more sophisticated in eliminating useless page results, you can have a little more faith that the search giant will be able to direct your would-be customers to the most relevant site rather than just the one with the most keywords. In short, make sure your content’s good!

Indeed, if your site is a little thin on content in the products or services page, it’s worth thinking about adding new text to flesh out the existing information. Ideally, you’ll have a page for each service, with a detailed account of what customers can expect each time. In fact, did you know that each of your website pages are ranked separately, rather than your website as a whole? Well, you do now.

Your website is an ever-evolving beast, but it needn’t be a beast of burden, as Mick Jagger would say. A well-designed, sensibly structured, and yes, responsive website means your business will be digitally bulletproof (even if you lose a few bullet points along the way).

Customers prefer responsive websites to apps

It’s long been common knowledge within Step Internet Towers that responsive websites are the only game in town, and a new survey would appear to confirm it. SEO firm BrightLocal revealed that 50% of consumers prefer to search for local businesses via their mobile internet browser, compared with 10% for mobile applications. What does this mean? There’s a massive opportunity to promote your business online with a mobile-friendly, responsive website. Most of your customers aren’t sitting behind a desktop when they Google your firm; they’re walking down the street, standing on-board a bus, or who knows, abseiling…

Have you thought of making a YouTube how-tovideo?

Let’s face it, there’s no one out there who’s as good a hairdresser/plumber/builder/electrician as you are, right? Exactly! Well, we definitely recommend recording a YouTube “how-to” video. These offer a superb opportunity to share your unique skills, services and capabilities with a potentially massive audience. New research from Google shows that “how-to” video searches are up more than 70% year-on-year, with over 100 million hours watched in 2015. Just don’t get camera shy!

Move aside, desktops - mobile search is the king of the jungle

Every now and then, the world witnesses a changing-of-the-guard, like Chelsea’s ascent to footballing supremacy, or Charlton’s descent to footballing ignominy. Now, we can officially confirm that mobile search has overtaken desktop search for the first time ever. It may not have escaped your attention that we’re fans of mobile-friendly responsive websites, but there’s a good reason for that! A simple, user-friendly, built-for-mobile website is what scientists officially call a “no brainer”.
