Co-Headteachers: Mr Peter Hyman & Mr Oli de Botton
Head of Primary: Mrs Meg Drummond
Happy New Year! Welcome back to a glorious spring term here at School 21 Primary! I would like to say a huge thank you to all the parents and carers for your continued support last term, it was wonderful to see so many of you at our workshops, Bring a parent to school week, the fantastic Festival of Lights and our Exhibition where the
amazing work of all our students were showcased. This term promises to have just as many amazing opportunities with the NSPCC Number day, our Values launch, safer internet week and Equality week celebrations to just name a few! Please make sure you check our 'Dates for your Diary' and monthly calendar for all upcoming events. As you are aware we are focusing on attendance and how we celebrate this across the school. All students will be recognised for 100% attendance weekly within their classrooms going forward from this term. It is important that all students are here every day and on time, as
learning starts as soon as they step through the door with morning work such as handwriting, spelling practice or reflecting on previous work. Keep an eye out for your child to come home with an attendance sticker and their photos on display in their classrooms every Monday! (Starting Monday 20th January) Have a wonderful weekend, Mrs Drummond
Parent Support Needed! Two of our values are excellence and responsibility, which we ask the students to show every day they are at School 21. To help us with this, we need our parents to also be modelling excellence and responsibility when in the school. This includes not smoking near the entrance gates, not wearing pyjamas when dropping
off or collecting your child and speaking politely to everyone. I appreciate your continued support to make School 21 the best it can be!

Dear Parents/Carers,Thank you to those who have registered with the Easy Fundraising platform, the donations have already started to come in!For those who haven’t, this platform allows us to turn everyday online shopping into donations for the school which can then be spent on equipment and facilities. If you haven’t registered yet and are happy to help (at no cost to you!), we ask that you do two things:1. Sign up to Easy Fundraising and register School 21 as your cause of choice here: https://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/invite/GO6EW2/
(We get a £5 donation for every person that signs up via that link!).2. Install the donation reminder on your computer: https://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/donation-reminder/
This is a totally unobtrusive button that sits on your internet bar, and pops up with a subtle reminder every time you shop with a retailer that donates to us.Finally, please share with any family and friends. Thanks so muchAll at School 21
Sun NewspaperThe Sun newspaper is offering primary schools the chance to claim a set of free Collins Big Cat books worth over £600 (106 books). To claim this offer, we need to collect 3,500 tokens printed in The Sun and The Sun on Sunday from Saturday, November 23rd - Saturday, January 18th 2020. Please help us claim this fantastic offer by collecting the tokens and placing them in a designated box at the front office.
Spare ClothesIf your child has borrowed any clothes from our spare clothes box please bring them back as soon as possible as we have very little left. (eg if they have wet themselves)If you have any trousers, skirts or tights that you could donate that would be wonderful. Also if you would like to donate new children’s underwear that would be amazing.
Exploring EarthThis week in Reception we started our Spring project, “What do I need to know to be the best astronaut?” We started learning about Earth and mapped an informational text all about Earth. We wrote words that describe Earth and had fun pretending to be astronauts while speaking about Earth. Some students even designed
their own rocket ships. In the coming weeks, we will be learning much more about space and the planets.
Look Both Ways! This week Year 1 have begun thinking about road safety and what practices we are currently using to stay safe when crossing roads! To help us in this learning, we are using the program 'Scratch Jnr' on our iPads. This week we have had so much fun exploring Scratch Jnr and creating backgrounds, characters and
movement.
Terror in the Blitz! This week we introduced our new project. Our enquiry question is, 'How did WW2 affect ordinary people?'. We also started our new book, 'The Lion and the Unicorn' by Shirley Hughes which starts during the London Blitz. We travelled back in time to the 1940s for an afternoon and had a WW2 lesson, including an air
raid siren! We will use these experiences in our writing next week when we try to create a mood of terror!
Politics and algorithmsYear 3 started their new project on 'How does democracy in the UK work?' this week. To build our Computing skills in order to create a quiz, we have been looking at algorithms. We instructed each other to build stacks of cups and recorded
our instructions using symbols. We ‘programmed’ each other to follow the algorithms.
Timeline TeamworkTo introduce our new project ‘How can everyday heroes change history?’ we looked back at key events throughout human history and organised them onto a timeline, considering the meaning of ‘BC’ and ‘AD’. We did this by walking around the classroom and comparing our event to events that others
were holding. Eventually we were able to put ourselves in chronological order across the classroom.
