The winter night sky is magnificent - but how do you control dew? It's cold right across Australia and New Zealand now. The winter night sky is probably the best time of the year to observe but it comes with problem. Dew New Celestron C8 Aluminium Dew Shield Everyone has experienced dew. How often have you come out in the morning to find the windscreen on your car is wet? Or the grass is damp despite it never raining the night before? This happens when water in the air condenses onto a surface and occurs when the temperature of the surface is below the “Dew Point”. The Dew Point is the capacity of the air to carry moisture. It’s a combination of humidity or the amount of moisture in the air, temperature and atmospheric pressure. In other words, it’s not a set temperature and varies according to the conditions. On some nights you’ll be able to observe fine at a certain temperature and other nights, the same temperature will result in you telescope optics being covered in dew. The trick to keeping your telescope dry is keeping the optical surface above the dew point of the surrounding air. This doesn’t mean that it needs to be warm to touch, just above the temperature at which dew forms on a surface. There's two main ways to do this. The easiest are passive controls like dew shields and active solutions which gently heat your optical surfaces to keep dew at bay. We have a great fact sheet about dew that you can view here. BINTEL have an extensive selection of dew control products to keep you observing and imaging all through the cooler and damp evenings, including the newly released Celestron range. BINTEL have sold hundreds of Celestron telescopes with this accessory and we receive ongoing, positive feedback from our customers about it. This clever gimzo and app converts your mobile phone into a comprehensive maps system for finding astro objects in the night sky. In the much the same way the maps in your car give you precise directions on how to get to an address, Celestron StarSense Explorer will tell you where to point your telescope. Celestron StarSense Explorer 10" Dobsonian Telescope Ask to see Saturn or Jupiter or any one of thousands of deep-sky objects and StarSense Explorer will give you precise instructions on how to move the telescope (up, right...a bit further etc) to plonk the object right in your eyepiece ready for viewing. And it you don't know what to ask for, it can even take you on a guided tour of what's up tonight. The much larger versions of the Celestron StarSense Explore, the 8" and 10" Dobsonian telescopes, are now in stock at BINTEL. The larger the telescope, the more you will see! Update on Sky-Watcher Star Adventurer GTI availabilityIt was a bit of a wait getting the first large shipment of Sky-Watcher Star Adventurer mounts into BINTEL and on to our customers. These were all pre-sold and are now with their new, patient owners. There's another large batch of the GTI mounts due next week and these have also all been pre-sold. Space News - Huntsman is ready to start imagingThe Huntsman telescope developed by Macquarie University in Sydney is ready to begin its task of taking images of extremely faint astronomical objects in the Southern sky. You won't see many telescopes like this and that's because Huntsman is designed with a specialised task - observing very faint objects across a wide field of view. Huntsman is made up from an array of Canon telephoto lenses, inspired by the innovative Dragonfly Telephoto Array. A raft of ZWO cameras supplied by BINTEL helps to capture the data. Huntsman will help answer some outstanding questions in modern astrophysics research:
