We are excited to launch the inaugural issue of our newsletter and hope you enjoy reading about faculty research and teaching excellence, as well as our partnerships with other units to create new interdisciplinary opportunities. Note from Dean ShuklaOne of the best parts of my job as dean has been talking with faculty, staff, students, alumni, advisory boards and employers about the future of STEM education and of course, the future of the College of Science and Engineering. We have identified priorities, drafted goals and initiatives and sought reflections, and feedback to develop a shared vision, understanding and language around our collective future. Undergraduate Engineering Programs Ranked in the Top 30 NationallyThe College of Science and Engineering’s undergraduate engineering programs have been ranked #30 nationally for programs with no doctorate by U.S. News & World Report for 2025, making it #2 in Washington state. The Future of AIFather Paolo Benanti, Rome’s artificial intelligence and ethics advisor to the Pope and a visiting professor, talks of SU’s role in leading the conversation on technology and ethical practices. The Business of ResearchThe story of BioLegacy more-or-less began in 2021 in the Seattle University Mechanical Engineering Department with an orientation mixer shortly before the start of fall quarter. Vincent Reitinger, ’25, a Redmond High School graduate about to begin his higher education journey, was among that small cohort of students in attendance. From Virus Research to Teaching ExcellenceDr. Carolyn Stenbak is helping to guide the next generation of biologists and researchers. For Stenbak the path to becoming a professor wasn’t just her exposure as an undergraduate to the material that proved pivotal for her. It was also her introduction to research as an undergraduate. Alumni Profile: Spencer Machinski, '23Spencer Machinski, ‘23, is using his degree in Civil Engineering from Seattle University to build a successful career as a structural engineer at WSP. In this profile, he reflects on his career path, the role Seattle University played in preparing him for success and shares valuable advice for students pursuing civil and environmental engineering degrees. Fall Grants Showcase Academic Excellence and InnovationSeven faculty members in the College of Science and Engineering have received grants this fall, demonstrating the innovative and collaborative academic leadership of SU faculty in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and the expansion of programs vital to undergraduate research.
