Click here PLC’s Exciting Next Phase of DevelopmentAfter an extensive consultation process with parents, staff and students, the School’s leadership team and the School Council has been working hard behind the scenes on the School’s 20+ year Master Plan Vision document. The strategy behind a vision document is to guide future developments on the campus, whilst allowing for changes in the requirements of the School moving forward. The vision document does not lock the School in to future development but does provide some assurance that when developing the campus there is a long-term view to how current capital projects may impact on future campus development concepts. Within the Master Plan Vision document, allowances have been made for facilities that include a new Music Centre, the refurbishment of Finlayson House (which is likely to be used for boarding as an interim measure before a new Boarding House is constructed), the Early Learning Centre, the upgrade of classroom spaces in the Senior School View Street building, the Science and Innovation Centre, improved playground space for the Junior School, a 50m swimming pool and double-court indoor sport facility, and a performing arts centre that caters for large audiences. During this process, Council has also considered the purchase of external and/or neighbouring properties; currently this is not a priority for the School. Clearly this is an enormous body of work, hence it being a 20+ year forecast. That being said, it is likely that we will move on to our next phase of development soon. At the same time, staff are putting an enormous amount of effort into improving and introducing new programmes and activities into the curriculum across the Junior and Senior School. Our focus on science and innovation has seen the introduction next year of Year 11 WACE Marine and Maritime Studies (ATAR), an increase in the staffing allocation for Gifted and Talented programme and the hosting this term of the Junior Big Day In STEM fest, which was a great success. Students have also provided extremely positive feedback around the leadership and peer support programmes which have been offered to them this year. Some of the programmes that have been implemented to support staff growth and development over the past two years include Educator Impact (both for staff and middle managers) – designed to allow students to provide feedback on teaching; National Excellence in School Leadership Initiative (NESLI) – designed to develop the leadership skills of middle leaders at PLC; internally and externally developed Professional Levels 1,2 and 3 – designed to recognise and support excellent teachers who wish to remain in the classroom rather than move into leadership roles; Executive Coaching opportunities to support staff extend their skillset; 7 Habits of Highly Effective People (for operational, administration and teaching staff) and triad teacher support programme – enabling teachers to observe and support each other’s development. As a School, we remain committed to developing programmes for students and staff, along with the development of our facilities that enable the best outcomes for our girls. Once decisions have been finalised regarding the next phase of development works at the School, we will provide you with more information. I am very proud to lead an organisation with a strong history of innovation and look forward with great anticipation as we continue to move forward. - Dr Kate Hadwen, Principal Saturday 9 JuneYear 6 Ladies Long Lunch, 1.30 pm Monday 2 July - Friday 20 JulyJunior School E-magination Winter Holiday Club Thursday 16 AugustSenior School Arts Day, save the date Saturday 25 AugustFarm2Fork, save the date Friday 26 OctoberOpen Garden Day, save the date ‘Listening is the highest form of love’. These words of the late theologian, Paul Tillich, present a simple yet powerful truth. Amid our endless words and chatter may we possess that gift of spirit, the gentle art of listening; both to our own inner voice and to that precious – and often hidden – voice in the other person. To really hear what the other person is saying is a work of love, of acceptance, of wisdom.

Having the opportunity to watch PLC girls grow into young women is a hugely rewarding part of our roles at this School. I am currently enjoying Art Camp with the Year 12 Visual artists, who regularly surprise me. Their advancement as artists has been an astonishing journey to observe; developing their growth in self-confidence within their artwork is a heartening experience to be a part of. They now exhibit the confidence to be ambitious with their ideas, producing innovative and exciting concepts. On reflection, I considered what has happened within their art journey which has enabled growth in self-confidence? A theme that has become apparent, is the risk-taking they have endured during the production stage. Can a formula be written which concentrates on ‘risk-taking’ to enable confidence to be nurtured? If we could give the gift of confidence to our girls, the impact on their lives and future aspirations could be monumental. Research states that girls are not necessarily born with or without confidence, it is in fact a learnt behaviour, which can be developed and nurtured. It can also be lost quickly due to an adverse experience or failure. Some girls may outwardly appear self-confident but inside, every eventuality is as difficult as the next. It is clear that confidence in our young women is necessary for future growth; how do we create self-belief to push limits of their abilities? How do they continue to try, even at the risk of failure and humiliation? The Suncorp Australian Youth and Confidence Research Report reveals 75% of teenage girls (13-18 years) believe the key to achieving their self-confidence is having supportive friends and family, followed by good grades at school -65%. Achieving life goals -63%, positive body image 38%, with receiving social media likes at 36%. Maud Purcell’s (2016) research identifies the below recommendations in improving self-confidence:
Improving self confidence in all areas of school life is a particular focus of ours and will continue to be imperative in all that we do as educators. Giving them to tools to change their behaviours will enable a positive improvement in their self-belief. - Emma Haining, Deputy Head of Senior School (Years 11 &12) World Scholars CupOn Friday 1 June and Saturday 2 June, Sacred Heart College hosted the Perth Round of the World Scholar’s Cup (WSC). 600 students participated in the WSC on the Friday and Saturday of the long weekend. This year, PLC fielded ten teams: four Senior and six Junior teams, ranging from girls in Years 6 to 10. Every Friday afternoon for several months, these girls have engaged in training sessions for the event, being supported by Mrs Walker, Mr Mirosevich and several staff in the School. Once again, we performed exceptionally well across all aspects of the competition. While there were numerous individual and team achievements, the following most notable achievements must be acknowledged: Senior Division
Junior Division
Our girls once again represented the School with pride and humility and contributed to what was an overwhelmingly celebratory atmosphere. A special thank you must go to parents and staff who dedicated so much time and energy to this event. These staff make our School such a wonderful place to be educated. ICAS Maths Assessment (Years 7 - 10)ICAS is an independent, skills-based assessment programme administered through the University of New South Wales. Each year, PLC selects a number of girls in Years 7 to 10 to participate in this competition. If your daughter has not been selected and you would like her to participate we have a few spare places available. Please advise Ms Shelley Stewart by email shelley.stewart@plc.wa.edu.au no later than Friday 22 June if you would like to fill one of these places. Late entries cannot be accepted. Sitting Date: Tuesday 14 August Further information may be found at here AMC Maths Competition (Years 7 - 12)This competition is designed to test mathematical thinking rather than focus on calculations themselves, thus such questions are designed so that they can be answered just as quickly without a calculator as with one. The problems get more difficult through the competition, so that at the end they are challenging to the most gifted students. This year, the competition will be completed online. Sitting Date: Thursday 9 August Further information may be found here If you would like your daughter to participate, please advise Ms Shelley Stewart by email shelley.stewart@plc.wa.edu.au no later than Friday 22 June. Costs will be added to the school fees. Late entries cannot be accepted. World Environmental DayEnvironmental Captain, Sacha (Year 12) attended the Plastic Free July Foundation Launch for World Environmental Day on Tuesday 5 June. She was fortunate enough to have a chat with the Minister for Environment, Hon. Stephen Dawson MLC and shared the initiatives that PLC is taking in reducing waste, especially plastic waste. We are looking forward to celebrating Plastic Free July in August on our return from holidays and hopefully have a presentation by the founder of Plastic Free July Rebecca Prince Ruiz.
