The techlash hasn’t come up in the Democratic presidential debates. Warren could change that.
For the past few years, there has been a loud and contentious debate about the need to reform and regulate Silicon Valley. But it hasn’t come up during the three Democratic presidential debates this year: Except for a quick aside about American workers’ jobs, the subject of technology has been almost entirely absent from debate stages. Thirty-one women who “run the world” — and what can be learned from them
Today, a new book called “Girls Who Run the World” hits real and virtual bookshelves, and for anyone with a middle-school aged kid or looking to inspire a high-schooler, it might be worth checking out. Featuring 31 women who are the CEOs of companies that they have created themselves — think Spanx, Glossier, Caribou Sciences, and Stitch Fix — each of their stories underscores that dreams sometimes can be made into reality when you want something badly enough. We talked yesterday with the book’s author, Diana Kapp, a longtime essayist (with an MBA from Stanford) who authored the book in part to encourage her own teenage daughter to pursue her passions while making clear there will be obstacles, always, to overcome. The Millennial Urban Lifestyle Is About to Get More Expensive
Several weeks ago, I met up with a friend in New York who suggested we grab a bite at a Scottish bar in the West Village. He had booked the table through something called Seated, a restaurant app that pays users who make reservations on the platform. We ordered two cocktails each, along with some food. And in exchange for the hard labor of drinking whiskey, the app awarded us $30 in credits redeemable at a variety of retailers. [ The Atlantic ]

This Softbank-backed company has a wild valuation. Sky-high growth. Potential to disrupt an entire industry. And no profits in sight. No, we're not talking about WeWork. Meet Oyo. And it doubled its valuation to $10 billion after the company announced last week it is raising $1.5 billion in capital to expand its presence in foreign markets, including the U.S. and the U.K, according to a company statement. 2019 on pace for another $100B invested as VC exit value tops $200B for the first time [datagraphic]
With one quarter to go in 2019, deal value is set to surpass $100 billion for the second year straight. Mega-deals continue to flow unabated, with 185 already completed this year. While another year of such capital largesse may seem de rigeur by now, 2019 exits represent a new high: Annual exit value has exceeded $200 billion for the first time this decade. Despite their lumpiness, liquidity events for VC have ranged from outsized to more frequent than normal, with well over two-thirds of the year's exits sized at $100 million or more. Liquidity seems to be finally coming in tandem with massive investment flows in 2019. [ Pitchbook ] Checkout 15K+ Venture Capital Data on our platform.
