A big thank you must go to the Open Garden Day Co-ordinators, Susannah Evans and Kate McGee, as well as the entire Open Garden Day Committee and all the wonderful parent volunteers who helped on the day. Students to Staff - Anna CurryWhile PLC teaching staff are often in the spotlight, we would like to take the time to acknowledge one member of our Operations and Administration team, who works behind the scenes to provide students with positive educational experiences. It is a truism that PLC girls always come back, whether as parents, staff members, or guests, and Anna Curry is no exception. She has spent a combined total of 17 years at PLC, graduating in 2008 and commencing as an Academic Administration Assistant in mid 2009 while studying for an Arts Degree at UWA. On completing her degree, Anna ventured to the UK in 2015 where she completed a Masters in 20th Century English Literature at Durham University. We were delighted to welcome her back in 2016. While Academic Administration Assistants themselves are often not visible, their work is. Anna is responsible for many of the attractive posters on the classroom walls. She is involved in many power point presentations for innovative lessons, together with flashcards that she prepares for interactive learning. She supports teaching staff with uploading resources on SEQTA and her speciality is in the formatting of exams with high quality images. This year Anna has also found time to be a coach and supervisor for the PLC team competing in the recent Perth Philosophon Competition. It is not only teachers who are passionate about education. Support staff, like Anna, are also invested in high quality teaching and work hard behind the scenes to make sure PLC students enjoy meaningful educational opportunities. - Chris Robinson, Deputy Principal Principal’s Thank You SundownerDate: Friday 8 November Foundation Breathe Cocktail PartyOld Collegian, Sasha Bosich (1989) has just reached her 2nd year post-lung transplant and is hosting the second Foundation Breathe Cocktail Party. Cooking for a Cause – Years 7 & 9 Family Service ProjectsThe Years 7 and 9 Family Service Projects 'Cooking for a Cause' are looking for families to cook for people who are at risk of experiencing homelessness. Details regarding registration and the project for Year 7 families can be found here, and for Year 9 families here. Year 6 ExhibitionLast night, we saw the culmination of the Primary Years Programme with the Year 6 Exhibition. For me, the great strengths of the PYP were on display: students taking ownership of their learning and the transdisciplinary nature of the Programme. At the Exhibition, you could see the depth of learning the students had achieved and the multiplicity of inquiries reflecting the diversity of the girls themselves. The transdisciplinary nature of the Programme allows many aspects of the curriculum and specialist areas to integrate into the inquiry process. My congratulations to all the Year 6 students and the staff, parents, mentors and experts who guided our students through this wonderful achievement. JIGSSA Athletics CarnivalOn Tuesday, our Years 5 and 6 students participated in the JIGSSA Athletics Carnival. They competed with a fine effort and were good sports! I was very proud of the way they engaged throughout the day. Year 6 SwimmingStudents in Year 6 are invited to attend swim training sessions with the Years 7 to 12 PLC and Scotch students. The training is designed to help students transition to Senior School swimming in preparation for 2020 swim carnivals. This is not a learn-to-swim programme and students should be able to swim 50 metres continuously, with a view to completing an overall distance of 1 km to 1.5 kms during the session. Trainings are combined with Scotch College students and held at either the PLC or Scotch College swimming pool. Please check the swim schedule here for venue and start times. Parents are required to transport students to Scotch College and a bus will return swimmers to PLC at the end of the session. Pre-registration is not required. When you arrive to your session, please advise the PLC staff member and they will add your name to the attendance list. If you require further information regarding Sport at PLC, please contact Ms Pearce, Head of Sport (Annette.Pearce@plc.wa.edu.au). ICAS AssessmentsPlease be advised that the results for the ICAS assessments have now been received. Parents of students who participated will be contacted shortly with access codes. Becoming Waste Wise in the Junior SchoolAs part of becoming Waste Wise in the Junior School, we have been working on the following projects:
With the Year 6 Exhibition, the students were encouraged to find an issue that they felt passionate about. One of our Year 6 students, Charlotte Kestell, based her Exhibition work around the awareness of plastic on our environment; creating the slogan: Plastic is not Fantastic. In taking action around this message, she has been working with our Canteen Staff to remove plastic utensils from lunch orders. This has been well supported and the following plan has been put into place for when students order canteen lunches: Students are encouraged to bring their own utensils to school and should a student forget their own eating utensil, they will be able to borrow a fork from Mrs Barnaby at Reception. After eating, the student will wash their borrowed utensil in soapy water provided by the school canteen and return the utensil to Mrs Barnaby. Together, taking small steps, we can make a sustainable difference, starting with our immediate school environment. - Richard Wright, Head of Junior School Chapel Years 2 to 6 – hosted by Class 5SADate: Wednesday 23 October Year 4 JIGSSA Athletics CarnivalDate: Thursday 7 November Junior School Assembly – hosted by Year 1Date: Friday 8 November Junior School Orientation DayDate: Friday 22 November Junior School End of Year AssemblyDate: Monday 9 December Best Wishes for Year 12 ExamsThe Year 12 girls have finally begun their exams, which they have been working towards for the last 13 years. Our hope is that each of them is well prepared, well rested and focused on achieving their best through the differing demands of the next few weeks. I have seen much studying and consultation with teachers over the last few weeks. It has been heartening to see the engagement and the concentration that the girls have displayed in the lead up to the beginning of the exams. Finding a Healthy Balance in LifeThe rest of the School have been working hard to manage the demands of schoolwork, family and friends, and co-curricular commitments. As always, the best approach for this is to find a healthy balance. Summer UniformAlthough the weather has been a little capricious over the last few days, it is nevertheless summer uniform time. Most of the girls have taken to the summer uniform with alacrity, enjoying wearing socks instead of stockings and generally having fewer layers of clothing. What it has revealed however, is that the skirt length of many skirts is too short. Can I ask our families to support us in ensuring that each of our girls are wearing the correct uniform from top to toe, including wearing their panama hat to and from school. Speech NightAs we head towards the end of the year it is perhaps timely to remind our girls and their families that the attendance at Speech Night is compulsory. We look forward to every family joining us at HBF Stadium on Thursday 12 December to enjoy this final tribute to the Year 12 students and to appreciate, once again, the performances that have been offered over the year. - Jenny Crisp, Head of Senior School Student AchievmentsThe 2019 State Chinese Writing CompetitionCategory: Years 3 & 4 Category: Years 5 & 6 Category: Years 7 & 8 The 2019 Side by Side Language State CompetitionCategory: Years 5 & 6 Chinese Category: Years 7 & 8 Chinese
