2020 Guy Okakok Scholarship Recipients

The Guy Okakok Sr. Leadership Award was established in 2015, in recognition of ASNA's 50th Anniversary. It was named after one of the ASNA founders, Guy Okakok Sr., who championed the rights of Alaska Natives. The purpose of the award is to provide academic scholarships to eligible North Slope tribal members who are interested in post-secondary health care, social services, or health-related certificate programs. Scholarship awardees will receive up to $2,500 per semester or $5,000 per academic year, based on financial need.

After extensive review, ASNA is proud to announce the recipients of the 2020 Guy Okakok, Sr. Leadership Award, Jenessa Oviok and Paige LaFountain.  ASNA would also like to thank all of the other applicants.

Jenessa Oviok

Jenessa is from Utqiaġvik, Alaska. She is pursuing her undergraduate degree in Psychology at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.  This Fall she will be entering her sophmore year at UAF.  Jenessa follows her passion to someday become a doctor to help the people in her community.  Congratulations Jenessa!

Paige LaFountain

Paige, also in her sophmore year, is pursuing her undergraduate degree in Exercise Science at the Linfield College in Oregon.  Paige lineage from her mother’s side can be be traced back to Utqiaġvik, where her Aaka lived prior to moving to Anchorage.  Paige’s aspirations of working in the field of Exercise Science were borne from a desire to help athletes recover from serious injuries, after witnessing firsthand what it does to an athlete physically and mentally. Congratulations Paige!

COVID-19 Update

In the last 4 weeks there have been over 50 positive North Slope Borough resident cases.  According to data provided by The State of Alaska Coronavirus Response Hub.

A majority of cases are in Utqiaġvik have been determined to be caused by community spread.  In an effort to slow the spread of the COVID-19 disease  we encourage our people to be more mindful of protecting ourselves and others by taking simple preventative measures.

The 3 most effective ways at containing and stopping the spread of COVID-19 are the following:

  • WEAR A FACE MASK
  • STAY SIX-FEET APART FROM OTHERS
  • WASH HANDS FOR 20 SECONDS FREQUENTLY
