Throwback ThursdayMidwife, Flora Anne BritonThis cookbook in the collection of the National Museum of Australia once belonged to nurse and midwife, Flora Anne Briton – her address of 23 Albert Road Strathfield is on the flyleaf with the date of 1921 and ‘Royal Hospital’ also inscribed. This site is now part of the apartment complex at 33-39. Flora and her sister Agnes had emigrated from Glasgow in 1913. She appears in the Medical Register as a midwife in Homebush in 1926 but she was soon lured to Canberra where midwives were in short supply. She married Augustine Phillips in 1928 and died there in 1988. Courtesy National Museum of Australia |
