6 New Ridge Trail Miles Coming to the Peninsula

For over 20 years, the Ridge Trail and our local partners have been working together to close the trail gaps along the San Francisco peninsula. Last Tuesday, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) unanimously approved a project that will get us six miles closer to a fully-connected Ridge Trail, and will extend our longest segment along the Western Ridge to 86 miles.

The Southern Skyline Ridge Trail Extension project includes the construction of six new trail miles and a staging area south of Highway 92, and an improved staging area and ADA accessible loop on the southern end of the Fifield Cahill Trail (north of Highway 92).  Learn more about this exciting project here.

Kastner Family Circumnavigators

family on trail

Over the last year, the Kastner Family made it their “Covid-19 Project” to  circumnavigate the Ridge Trail–hiking all sections of the nearly 400 miles of the trail–and then some. During their journey the Kastners have learned about navigation, the natural world, and each other through the memories and experiences that have come along with their circumnavigation adventure. Read about their journey here.

Ridge to Bridges Spotlight

3 people on trail

A chance trail encounter near Ed Levin County Park on the way to Mission Peak brought together these 3 Ridge Trailers. Meet Besaint and Norbert, trail running partners who finished their circumnavigation this spring and Karen Rhodes, Ridge Trail Board member and one of our lead peer-to-peer fundraisers for Ridge to Bridges. She’s hiked 70 miles with more to go. Support Karen and the Ridge Trail here.

The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) provides utilities and manages the protected watershed lands for the City of San Francisco and several Bay Area counties. Their mission is to provide high quality, efficient and reliable water, power, and sewer services while sustaining our water resources. The Ridge Trail has worked with SFPUC for decades to establish trail connections through their 23,000-acres SF Peninsula Watershed lands.

We partner with SFPUC to allow docent-led trips on the highly protected 10-mile Fifield Cahill Trail and will be opening another 6 miles in 2023! Join our advocates email list to help us open more trails like this!
