![]() ![]() ![]() WELCOME Welcome back to the new term of CSL! We have another wonderful slate of community engaged courses that rigorously stretch our students’ intellects, challenge their assumptions about their desire to ‘help’ and, with the expert guidance of our community practitioners, invite them into new modes of solidarity with Edmonton’s civil society organizations and the people with whom they work. Our Humanities program too, once again, is shaping up for a bumper year. We owe our sincere thanks to our instructors, committed community partners, and to all those who make CSL such a potent and impactful learning experience for many. Last November the CSL Advisory Board acclaimed a new articulation of CSL’s Mission, Vision, Values and Objectives for the next 5 years. We will be communicating these out in a variety of ways in the coming months. Many people have contributed to their formation, and we believe they speak to best of CSL’s history and exciting opportunities for the future. We welcome our Partnership Coordinator, Lynn Sutankayo back from leave, and also give thanks for the wonderful administrative support we receive from Barb Baker, Diane McKen, Ceilidh Morrisette and Abigail David. Our Evaluation Coordinator, Winta Ghidei goes on leave (with Shinginaria Mandizadza coming on board), Owuraku Kusi-Ampofo joins CSL as a Graduate Research Assistant and Eunice Doroni becomes our new CSL Intern. I was blessed with a baby girl (Senja - means "sunset") and to spend my maternity leave caring for her and my three year old son. Looking forward to reconnecting with Community Partners, Instructors and students to plan more great projects! ![]() Eunice Doroni, CSL Student Intern I am currently doing an after-degree in Political Science, minor in Human Geography & Planning. After making the decision to do an after-degree, I knew that one of the things I wanted to do was more CSL classes, or be more involved with CSL in general. I have taken 2 classes with CSL components, 1 CSL designated course, and will take 1 more in the spring in Nicaragua! CSL has given me so many opportunities to break out of my shell and be more involved with the non-profit sector which I love. I am excited to channel all my passion for the non-profit sector and CSL programming as this semester’s CSL intern! ![]() HUMANITIES 101 On the heels of a busy and successful fall 2017 term, our winter 2018 term is up and running. We welcome a large group of new learners in the on-campus evening class! The theme for that course this term is “The Power of Naming”, we intend to explore who is named, who gets to name, and how this impacts how we are seen and heard. The thirteen weeks ahead promise to be fun, incredibly interesting, and very busy! The second course that we offer at Wings of Providence is just starting. Our theme for this term is “Women’s Movements”. Last term, we explored individual radical women and the graduates spoke about how they would like to know more about the movements that inspired and supported those radical women. Lisa Prins, Humanities Coordinator ![]() PARTNERSHIP SPOTLIGHT Gradual Rising of Women At GROW we SEED (support, empower, encourage and develop) women globally. We believe in the strength of inclusivity, diversity and intersectionality of all women, particularly immigrant women. No one woman is exactly the same as the other. The best way to empower women is to let them speak for, and about themselves in their own voices. That’s the spirit of our Speak Out Women Series, countrywide peer-to-peer conversation cafes where women speak about their challenges, successes and accomplishments. Everyday women are heroes. At GROW everyone grows. We celebrate these women in books, awards and conferences. GROW was founded by Tracy Folorunsho, a CSL student who participated in the pilot year of the CSL Pathways Program and was placed with the Edmonton Immigrant Services Association. GROW has been a community partner with CSL since the Fall 2017 term, working with students from a Women and Gender Studies class. This Winter term, GROW is looking forward to working with WGS students again, as well as with students from the CSL 100 and MARK 455/655 classes. ![]()
