Researchers to use rapid genetic test to prevent antibiotic–related deafness in newborns

Welcome to our September newsletter which brings you the latest updates from the NIHR Manchester Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) and Clinical Research Facility (CRF).

The BRC connects Manchester researchers to drive forward the transformation of scientific breakthroughs into life-saving treatments and care for patients, whilst the CRF provides facilities for early phase clinical research studies in adults and children.

This month saw the launch of two new animations to promote the work of the BRC and CRF.

 

The animations provide an overview of both infrastructures and highlight how the BRC and CRF can work with commercial companies to rapidly translate research into improved patient care.

Test could detect patients at risk from lethal fungal spores

A study led by Dr Paul Bowyer, a researcher within the BRC respiratory theme has discovered a genetic mutation in humans linked to a 17-fold increase in the amount of dangerous fungal spores in the lungs.

This free event will bring the public and researchers together to discuss psoriasis, treatment options, and exciting research ongoing in Manchester and celebrate the launch of the Psoriasis - Rapid Access Clinic - a cutting edge initiative and revolutionary approach to psoriasis management.

The NIHR Manchester Biomedical Research Centre is hosted by Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust and The University of Manchester.  The partnership also involves The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust and is supported by the Manchester Academic Health Science Centre.

 

The NIHR Manchester Clinical Research Facility comprises four dedicated experimental medicine research units at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, Manchester Royal Infirmary, Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital and Wythenshawe Hospital.
