No Images? Click here Dear Friend of PLC This week has been a celebration of the values of PLC. Beginning on Sunday with our Rowing girls achieving great results at the Sydney National Regatta, making PLC the sixth top Rowing school in the country. Rowing isn’t an easy sport, it takes dedication, resilience and hard work to achieve at the level our girls achieved last week. While the results were fantastic, I was particularly proud of the way in which our girls carried themselves before, during and after events. From the other side of the watercourse, it was only the PLC girls I could hear cheering on their teammates. It was pure joy, when the U17 Schoolgirl coxed VIII came third, to hear them give three cheers for the first and second placed teams whilst on the podium, I had not witnessed this by any other team. This demonstration of spirit was followed by the World’s Greatest Shave on Monday afternoon, raising a total of $31,622. It was fantastic to see how many girls participated in the event. Congratulations in particular to Soriaya Munshi (Year 7), Kate Pruiti (Year 8), Sacha Winter (Year 12) and Emily Davies (Year 12) on shaving their heads to raise money to support the Leukemia Foundation. This is an incredibly courageous thing to do for anyone; but for a teenager it is particularly remarkable. Congratulations to all girls involved and to all who have given generously to the cause. This morning I had the absolute pleasure of wandering around our campus to give out Easter eggs to our girls, little boys, staff and parents. Here are a few fun facts about Easter eggs to set the scene for the long weekend.
On a more serious note, Easter Eggs for many symbolize joy, celebration of new life and resurrection. While this could be considered literally, I am suggesting that over the coming break we reflect on how we bring joy into the lives of those around us, as our girls have done in the examples given above. Additionally, how we help celebrate with others when they are deserving of this. At times, this may require starting again when a friendship has been damaged or harsh words shared; within each of us there is the capacity to embrace the spirit of Easter and continue to, or further enrich the lives of those around us. Happy Easter to all within our community, I hope the Easter Bunny finds her way to your home over the long weekend. -- Dr Kate Hadwen, Principal Click here for the Lighthouse Grand Opening Progamme. We are now looking for one more to join the committee: ‘Let anyone among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her’ (John 8:7). Waking up on Sunday morning to the news of the ball tampering that had occurred in the cricket test match in Cape Town, left me feeling ill. So many questions… how could they have done this? Why go to such lengths? The pressure to win must be enormous, and little could Steve Smith and the others have realised how overwhelming the world-wide condemnation would be. The incident will tarnish their reputations forever. We all fail. We do and say things we regret and we hurt people we love. Even the Apostle Paul got it wrong often. ‘I want to do the things that are good, but I do not do them. I do not do the things I want to do, but I do the bad things I do not want to do.’ Aren’t we a bit like Paul? But somehow Paul found a way to deal with his demons and his despair. ‘Who will save me from this body that brings death? I thank God for saving me through Jesus Christ our Lord! So now, those who are in Christ Jesus are not judged guilty’ (Romans 7:24-25). When Jesus speaks to the condemned woman, all of her accusers have left. ‘Neither do I condemn you then,’ he says. ‘Go your way and from now on do not sin again’ (John 8:10-11). Easter Sunday is about new beginnings; second chances. I’m hoping the players involved will find a way to live with their choices, to redeem themselves and to find meaning and a purpose to keep going. May Easter be a time of new beginnings, of second chances for all of us. May the Spirit of the living God enable us to embrace this new life and to live life to the full. A very blessed Easter to all of you. - Rev Gary Van Heerden EasterEaster is one of the most sacred holidays in the Christian year. It marks the end of the season of Lent which was a period of prayer and fasting. The Junior School Chapel this week was led by the students of Year 6R and focused on Easter. The girls spoke of the many traditions around the world which mark this special season of the Church year. Eggs, representing new life or life cycles, are linked to the Christian belief of Jesus dying on the cross and rising on the third day. Hot cross buns, traditionally eaten on Good Friday, also represent the cross on which Jesus was crucified. Many families also celebrate Easter in the typical Greek tradition by dyeing eggs. In whatever way you choose to mark Easter this year, we wish you a safe and happy season with your family and friends.
