From the general manager's desk Welcome to 2018 and another exciting year at Muresk. Last year was very eventful with lots of highlights including growth in student numbers and, lots of new initiatives, programs and courses. In 2017, we welcomed 2,193 people through our gates for both full time and short courses. This year looks to be even more promising with the recent commencement of the Summer School and enquiries coming in across all courses, particularly for the Diploma of Agriculture and the new Emerging Leaders in Agriculture, Technology and Enterprise program. We also have some really exciting new short courses focused on agricultural technologies which will be delivered by industry renowned experts. We look forward to working with Curtin University as we consolidate planning for the launch of the Associate Degree in Agribusiness to be delivered at Muresk Institute from 2019. Development on the farm is moving at a great rate with the introduction of new technologies. Research and development preparations are well under way for the Sire Evaluation program with the WA Stud Merino Breeders and a range of cropping trials are also in the works. We have another exciting project that will be launched midyear too. Further details will be provided at a later stage, but I can tell you it will be a great step forward for student learning. As you can see it’s going to be another big year and we look forward to sharing our progress with you over the coming months.

New recruits bring innovative practices to Muresk Last year we introduced the Muresk Institute team and now we’ve grown two stronger. Farm Supervisor Steve Wainewright and Senior Project Officer Jim McMahon have joined the team, managing the Muresk Institute farm and developing innovative programs, respectively. |

Got beef? In March we look forward to renowned industry experts Dr Enoch Bergman and Dr Cliff Lamb’s Building a better cow presentation. This one day presentation is tailored to individuals working within the livestock industry and focuses on specific areas of beef production. |

2018 sire evaluation on track Last week 600 of our Bilandri bloodline Merino ewes were artificially inseminated using the semen from 12 leading Merino sires. Prior to insemination our ewes were prepared through good nutritional management to have a body condition score of 3 + at the time of insemination. Lambing is expected for late June when data collection will commence documenting the breeding performance of the 12 sires (birth weights, weaning weights and percentages). To see the progeny for yourself come on down to the 2018 the Dowerin Field Days in August to see our shearing demonstration. This program is funded and supported by the Stud Merino Breeders Association WA. Resultant data will be made available on the Merino Superior Sires website managed by the Australian Merino Sire Evaluation Association. |

Launched: technology and enterprise program for agriculture leaders To coincide with National Agriculture Day, Minister for Education and Training Sue Ellery visited Muresk Institute to launch the Emerging Leaders in Agriculture, Technology and Enterprise (ELATE) program. This program aims to address contemporary issues in agriculture and will provide participants with the knowledge, skills and networks to do business better. |
