Characters:Character breakdown: There are only four singers in this show. All actors need to listen to the music of the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra; Doris Day, Dean Martin, Ella Fitzgerald and bring 16 bars of music of that style. There is no Broadway belting in this show. Actors need to bring music as an accompanist will be provided. No a cappella singing. Christmas My Way has very challenging music. Actors must be able to sing in close harmonies which were indicative of the period. Ability to read music would be extremely helpful. This show is played straight (not a parody), in the style of the 1950s/early 60s television/night club variety shows. Sides will be provided at the audition. (Some sight-reading from the show might be required.) Man #1 – 40-60 – The actor must have a good ear, read music and have a flexible and versatile voice. The actor should be able to move well. Dance experience is not required. The actor should be able to sing close harmonies as part of an ensemble, project an easy style that was the Sinatra trademark but WITHOUT ANY PHYSICAL OR VOCAL IMITATION. Excellent stage presence is a must. Man #2 – 25-35 – The actor needs to have a strong baritone/tenor range. Strong flexible range needed in the style of the period. Must be able to vocalize up to a G above middle C. This actor carries much of the comedy of the show and must do so without schmaltz or parody. As with Man #1, the actor must project an ease in singing and relate well to the audience and possess ability to carry an audience for the length of the show. Woman #1 – 40 to 60 – Woman #1 is classy and sophisticated. Vocally this actor must possess a strong mezzo-soprano voice with the ability to sing through “the break.” In the style of a Rosemary Clooney, capable of part-singing. Woman #1 must be able to move well. Dance experience not required. Woman #2 – 25-35 – Woman #2 projects a bright and energetic image to the audience. Doris Day is a good model for this actor. Vocally this actor must also be able to sing in a healthy chest voice with the ability to move through to head voice as with Woman #1. Some tap experience would be great, but not a requirement.
