GP-SP Consults: Newsflash
March 21, 2019 – As part of the work of the Shared Care GP/SP Consults project, a group of thought leaders comprised of family physicians and specialists have been meeting regularly to identify solutions to several consultative issues identified as problematic by physicians across the region.
An important part of our work is to keep you updated on the approaches we are exploring to resolve these issues, and provide opportunities for you to offer feedback. As we move towards the end of the first phase of the project we will be sending out Newsflashes by email outlining action items like referral/consult guidelines, care coordination agreements, and on call protocols.
All of you have been welcome and invited to attend our meetings as contributors (thought leaders) throughout this process. If you feel strongly about an issue or have a contribution to make just pitch in at any time. The plan is to submit a proposal for a second phase to this project so we can continue working together on these important issues.
One of the first issues we tackled was resolving the confusion over who to call regarding re-admitted patients with post operative complications or existing inpatients at weekends, so we consulted some of our speciality groups and they have agreed on the following protocols: GENERAL SURGERY
• For all on call issues, please call the on call Surgeon. As a courtesy the on call Surgeon will contact the Surgeon who performed the procedure.
• For in patients call the MRP.
• If that person can’t be reached for some reason contact the on call Surgeon.
ORTHO
• For all In patients call the MRP - and only if they can’t be reached call the on call Surgeon.
UROLOGY
• For all post operative patients of Dr. Robinson call him no matter what even if he is not on call.
• New issues / consults call him if he is on call - call Kelowna if he is not on call.
PLASTICS
• Same as Dr Robinson
OBGYN:
• All issues (in patient or on call consults), call the on call Physician.
All above information will also soon be available on your MBMB App. Find out who's on-call, and it's one tap to message or call them. Here's how.
Brought to you by your GP/SP Working Group:
Dr. Trevor Aiken, Dr. Anne Dobson, Dr. Chi Zhang, Dr. Andrew Lawe, Dr. Megan Taylor, Dr. Kathryn Hale, Dr. Dharma McBride, Dr. Bbandama Makwati, Dr. Cortney Shier, Dr. Tandi Wilkinson, Dr. David Williams
The next GP/SP working group meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 25. The focus of the agenda will be guidelines for referral and consult letters.
Please contact Rachel Schmidt, Project Manager at rschmidt@divisionsbc.ca if you are interested in attending.
