Links eNewsletter - Term 4 Week 1 Dear valued member of the PLC community, A Message From the PrincipalFarewell and Best WishesTerm 4 always brings with it bittersweet emotions. While it is sad to start to farewell our Year 12 cohort, those emotions are mixed with hope and anticipation for the students as they embark on such an exciting time of their lives. This week, we held our Year 12 Final Assembly and tonight we will formally farewell the students at their Valedictory Service and Valedictory Dinner. It is a very special time for these students and their families. As I told the students on Tuesday at Assembly, they have every reason to look positively and hopefully into the future. There is endless potential in front of them and it is my strong hope that each member of the cohort will take with them on their life’s journey the key values they lived at PLC – to live a life of integrity, to always push themselves to learn, to contribute positively to the community and to work hard at being the best they can be. I am very proud of each member of our Year 12 cohort and I wish them all the very best as they prepare for their ATAR and International Baccalaureate examinations. I am looking forward to hearing of the great things you will achieve both personally and professionally as you embark on your next chapter. Citizenship PocketAt each Year 12 Final Assembly, we announce the Principal’s Citizenship Pocket recipient. This Pocket is awarded to a Year 12 student who:
The significance of this Pocket is the recipient is nominated by her peers and teachers. It was with great pleasure that this year’s Principal’s Citizenship Pocket was awarded to Tallulah Pestell (pictured above). Congratulations Tallulah. I have absolutely no doubt she will make her mark and do incredible things after graduating from PLC Perth. - Cate Begbie – Principal TransformationOn watching ABC TV’s Restoration Australia over the break, I was inspired by the re-birth of the magnificent 150-year-old Airlie House mansion in Milton, NSW. It was not only a story about the restoration of a beautiful building, but also about the family devastation that gave inspiration to the project, with the owners wanting to offer their resurrected home for community use. I was particularly taken by the restoration of the original brass gaslight fittings, etched with their beautiful engraving, but suffering from decades of neglect. However, with appropriate expertise each was transformed back to a condition better than new. My family would be the first to say that I am no handyman, but in my daily life, I am very much into the “transformation” business, of taking hold of lives suffering from the ravages of neglect and offering the possibility of discovering life anew. Transformation in people’s lives can take place in so many miraculous ways. At first, such change might not be obvious, but as with any restoration, someone has to first see the potential, then have the patience and will to see the project through to completion. There are other terms for transformation, such as “enlightenment”, but whatever the term used, special moments of rediscovering life, as if for the first time, are when we are changed and redirected to new paths, with infinite possibilities. Without such moments, we can simply go from one day to the next; one life event to the next as if nothing changes. Predictably, if the choice of a career or life partner is made for all the wrong reasons, or simply to satisfy the expectation of what others want for us, it can lead to deep unhappiness and a life lacking a real sense of fulfilment. We all need that certain spark when we just know what is right for us.
People ask how I can be so sure of what I believe. My simple response is that some things cannot be seen, nor can words adequately describe, yet they are never unknown. They just are, deep within us, burning in our hearts for the rest of our lives. At the beginning of our final term for 2021, many of you will be faced with a myriad of challenges and opportunities. My prayer is that in the midst of all the competing noise around you, you can take the time to simply be and hear the hidden voice within. It might actually change your life forever. May God be with you all. - Rev Nalin Perera – Chaplain Inter-House Athletics CarnivalWe are looking forward to our Years 1 to 6 Inter-house Athletics Carnival at McGillivray Oval on Tuesday. A day of running, jumping, and throwing, as each individual pursues her personal best, is invigorating. A reminder to the students to come prepared for the day with hats, sunscreen, drink bottles, house shirts and possibly some wet weather clothing. The Carnival will go ahead with the possibility of showers; however, if the conditions are forecasted as dangerous by the Bureau of Meteorology the afternoon before, we will cancel the event and parents will be informed by email. A normal school day will then be conducted. A reminder, as per the permission note, students can be collected from the venue at the end of the Carnival (2.00 pm), or they will be returned to school and can be collected at the regular time. PYP EvaluationThe Junior School is in the midst of our PYP Remote Evaluation. Mrs Rickwood and Mrs Howes have been extra busy delivering the evaluation team (via iPads) to watch classes and speak with students, staff, and parents. The evaluation concludes tomorrow; we will receive an evaluation report that outlines the strengths of our programme and provide us with areas we would want to develop. - Richard Wright – Head of Junior School Years 1 to 6 Inter-house Athletics Carnival

A Big First Week of TermWelcome back to all students and a special welcome to our new students who have started with us this term. This week, the whole school has been involved in a final farewell of the beloved Class of 2021 who are affectionately known as ‘that year group'. The Class of 2021 have been involved in our House Lunches, Year 12 Final Assembly, Year 12 Breakfast, a special surprise, and tonight they will be formally farewelled at our Valedictory Service and Dinner. These events take an entire team to organise and I would like to thank all the staff involved in making sure our Year 12s have such a special farewell from PLC. Induction ServiceAs we farewell the Year 12s, we also welcome our new leaders with the Induction Service for the Class of 2022 occurring on Monday 18 October. During the Induction Service, we will be recognising all members of the Class of 2022 and individually presenting each student with a special Year 12 Leadership Badge. We will also be acknowledging those students who have a formal leadership role. The Induction Service will take place in the Junior School Sport and Recreation Centre from 8.30 am to 9.45 am. Support Your Daughter EveningsThis week, our Year 10 students have officially become Year 11 students, and our Year 11 students are embarking on their final year as they have now entered Year 12. I would encourage all parents of both year groups to attend our upcoming Support Your Daughter Evening. You will receive information about the time and date of these events via the PLC App and in the next edition of Links. At the Support Your Daughter evenings, we will be providing you with important information to help make your daughter’s year a success. Your daughters are receiving the same information in their Year Meetings and we hope that this helps them settle in the rigour of their courses – whether they be ATAR, General, IB or TAFE certifications. - Rebecca Watts – Head of Senior School Valedictory Service & Dinner

Welcome backIt is always very exciting as our boarders return from their much-needed school holidays. There is a buzz in the atmosphere as the girls and staff rejoice. We are still very conscious of a small portion of our girls who have not yet had the opportunity to spend time with their families since 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions. We will continue to do our best to support these girls and provide them and all of our boarders with many exciting activities and opportunities to look forward to this term. Although it is tempting to rush to the finish line of the Christmas holidays, we plan to take this term steadily and savor every moment with the girls. We have a diverse variety of activities and outings planned thanks to our brilliant Kirsty Nugent, Deputy of Operation, who has developed the Term 4 recreational calendar in consultation with the boarders. An example of just some of the things we have planned include bonfires with Scotch College, make-your-own pizza nights using our stone pizza oven, DIY present-making for Christmas, shopping, trips to the beach and pool, sports game socials hosted by PLC, sunset fish and chips, crochet with Ellie, Claremont dinner leave for our Years 11 and 12 students, themed dinners, and of course the final legs of Quay2Quay. As we do every year, the co-ordinators will also be planning a special outing for their year group to celebrate the end of the year. This year, the students will be going to Adventure World for this celebration. I look forward to sharing all these moments with you and to spending Term 4 as a celebration of a fantastic year of boarding at PLC. - Katherine Hazlewood – Deputy of Wellbeing and Pastoral Care Birthing Kits Service Opportunity Year 7 – 11 – Extended to Sunday 24 OctoberThis is the third year that PLC is participating in the Birthing Kits for Australia (BKFA) project led by IB CAS students. This year, it is being led by Year 11 students, Antigone and Alice. What is it?Birthing kits are small packages containing seven fundamental items for women in developing countries, to have a safe and sanitary birth. The not-for-profit NGO offer volunteers to either donate or build birthing kits, which BKFA then sends to particular countries around the world that are less economically developed and have high maternal mortality rates due to unsanitary births. The organisation’s goal aligns directly with the UN’s Goal #3: Good Health & Wellbeing - By 2030, reduce the global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100,000 live births. Since their foundation in 1995 by Joy O’Dazy and the Adelaide Hills Zonta club, they have been very successful in their efforts, distributing over 2 million kits in 2019. Purpose and goal:The reason why we chose to host this service project at PLC is because we are passionate about empowering women all around the world and advocating for equality, whether it be supporting women and their rights or aiding those who do not have the same privileges we do. Our aim is to create 200 birthing kits altogether as a PLC community, with our overall objective to create and spread awareness about this severely overlooked global issue. What does the activity consist of?During the service activity, there will be a brief presentation about the project, then stations will be set up where students will be able to each have a role in the assembly process of putting together the kits and able to have a go at the different roles. Students will learn how valuable and essential each element of the kit is, what its purpose is and how each can drastically increase a woman’s and her baby’s survival during labour. How you can help:We are offering a very rare and unique service opportunity whereby your actions will have a direct visible impact on the lives of many women around the world, especially during our current circumstances with COVID-19. This service activity will not only serve as proof of how much impact teamwork and collaboration can create, but also how small steps can lead to big change. If you are interested in getting involved in this project:
There are only 40 spots available, therefore it’s a first-in, first-serve basis! Additional notes:If you do not manage or are unable to take part in this project, but you still want to get involved with the organisation, then you can either donate directly to BKFA or arrange your own Birthing Kit Assembly Day at home. - Chonny James – Director of Wellbeing We would like to advise all members of our community that View Street, between McNeil and Forrest Streets, will be closed between 9.30 am and 2.30 pm next Friday 22 October 2021 to accommodate more than 40 market stalls for Open Garden Day 2021.Open Garden Day Volunteers Urgently NeededThe Open Garden Day committee is still seeking a number of volunteers to support the wonderful Open Garden Day event on Friday 22 October. Water Polo Duo Make State TeamPic: Katie (left) and Amelia (right). Katie (Year 10) and Amelia (Year 11) have recently been selected in the Western Australian Under 17 State Water Polo team! The pair will compete in Adelaide in 2022 and both have aspirations to go on to play for Australia one day. Katie reflected that she originally started playing water polo because she was new to PLC and wanted to make friends. After playing the sport for six years, she has now been selected to represent her state. Amelia credits PLC's Health and PE Teacher, Mr Matt Donaldson, with her ever-improving skill set in the pool - especially her ability to get around a player with attacking with the ball. |
