We owe a debt of gratitude to the leaders of the Jewish community of one hundred years ago. Thanks to them, 1917 was indeed a momentous year.

Here at home, 1917 saw the founding of the Jewish Federation of Greater Toronto, Baycrest, Canadian Young Judaea, Canadian Hadassah-Wizo, and other organizations whose important work continues to this day.

On the international scene, through the efforts of Zionist leaders the Balfour Declaration was issued on November 2, 1917. The British Government’s declaration regarding a national home for the Jewish people was celebrated around the world, including here in Ontario as described at www.cjnews.com/perspectives/celebrating-balfour-declaration-pictures.

To mark the centennial of the Balfour Declaration, the Jewish Foundation distributed this limited edition print made from a 100 year old printing block:

If you did not receive one, please let us know and we will be happy to send one to you.

Today we all benefit from the efforts and investment of members of our community who preceded us. Through the Jewish Foundation we can continue to plan for and support our collective future.  Will future generations thank us, the way we thank those who have come before us? Through a donor advised fund or planned gift at the Jewish Foundation we can be certain that they will.

Celebrating the past hundred years, planning for the next.

A Jewish community like Toronto's doesn't simply happen.

It has been built by our community over time, by people like you, committed to Jewish life, the state of Israel and caring for our most vulnerable.
“We are passionate about honouring the sacrifices our parents – who survived the Holocaust - made for us. It is important to us that our children, Kevin and Beth, understand our history and appreciate how privileged they are. They have to know what we have learned: that tzedakah changes lives for the better. We hope the most important legacy we leave our children and grandchildren is one that transforms intangible values into tangible action, and by making a Legacy gift to United Jewish Appeal of Greater Toronto, we are humbled to be doing our part.”
