End of Term

Looking back on a squally last day of the term, it is hard to remember the wonderful fine weather we've had this term. The weather has been matched by the great learning opportunities the staff have provided and the awesome work the students have produced. Now it is a time to rest up before we head into the middle terms of the year.

Before we head off on the break, on behalf of the students and staff, a huge thanks to our dedicated team on FOTHS for the fundraising over the last few weeks and thanks to parents for getting in behind them. The Easter raffle, sale of Hot Cross Buns and Disco have raised good money for FOTHS (and of course made many of us fatter). Look out for some more fun, fundraisers next term.

With the end of the term we are also bidding farewell to Rohini and Ratish as our SKIDS operators. On behalf of the staff and students, we thank them for the support they've given the school over the past eight years. Rohini and Ratish will still operate the holiday programme over the next two weeks. From next term staff from SKIDS regional office will run the programme.

Next term there are plenty of events happening both inside and out of the classroom. At the end of May/start of June we have our annual book weeks incorporating the book fair, character dress up day and grandparents' afternoon, Matariki in the middle of June, and reporting to parents at the end of the term.

I hope you are able to enjoy having your children home over the next two-week break as much as we enjoy having them during term time. Have a safe time and we will look forward to welcoming everyone back on the 29th April.

How We Express Ourselves Showcase

As part of our next Unit of Inquiry into How We Express Ourselves, we are looking at holding a showcase night. This will focus on the different ways we celebrate culture. The evening will showcase the work the students do in class as part of the Unit of Inquiry. More will follow at the start of next term.

Board of Trustees Election

Next term is the Board of Trustee Elections. This is a great opportunity to set the future direction of the school. Given the whole-scale review of our schooling system, there will be the added opportunity to set the new structures in motion.

Boards are made up of five parents, the principal and a staff trustee. Their role is one of governance ensuring the school meets our legislative requirements. Whilst this sounds very high-brow, the Ministry of Education do a great job of breaking this down into plain language and we are supported by many professional agencies and organisations. Perhaps the main role of the board is helping to develop the culture and future direction of the school. In order to do this well, the board needs to have a good cross-section of our community.

The board election is for five parent trustees and the term of each board is three years. The board meets every third and eighth week of term. Currently these meetings are held on Tuesday mornings at 7:30 and run through to 9:00.

Murals

Over the holidays, pop into the school and have a look at the murals that have gone up. These were done last year by Mrs Kane and a 2018 Year 5&6 students.
