RMA fortnightly kōrero17 July 2018 Kia ora whanau, Just when you thought the RMA kōrero couldn’t get any more informative, showcasing the pinnacle of writing achievement. It is with intrepid pleasure that I bring you this week’s RMA kōrero for the fortnight - Plan change 14 Onsite effluent treatment aka the great debate. We all have to go to the loo, even the queen! Managing our waste is a very important to ensuring we don’t impact our environment. If not dealt with properly household sewage can enter waterways, contaminate the environment and risk public health. To keep household sewage away from waterways rules exist to manage its safe treatment and disposal. The On-site effluent treatment Draft Plan Change contains super interesting rules on septic tanks, aerated treatment systems, greywater, and (everyone’s favourite) composting toilets. The Plan change will replace the On-site Effluent Treatment Plan. The Draft Plan Change rules are Bay of Plenty specific and only apply when sewage is managed in by some kind of on-site system (such as a septic tank, composting toilet, or aerated wastewater system). There are also Maintenance Zones for communities where septic tanks must be regularly pumped-out. The rules do not apply to municipal sewerage discharges. The Draft rules will affect households, Papakāinga housing developments, and Marae. We will be seeking feedback on the Draft Plan Change during July - October 2018. We will understand if talking about household sewage discharges is not a priority for you. Because these changes are likely to affect your iwi, hapū and whanau though, we hope you make the most of the opportunity provide your feedback.
