Residents will have no doubt heard of the surprise retirement of Premier Mike Baird last week. His successor, Gladys Berejiklian, has already taken office and said "I'm willing to sit down with my colleagues about that issue (council amalgamations), I've not said one way or another what I will do about it. There's no doubt that some communities would prefer they didn't go through that process." Strathfield Council continues to review its legal options in light of any new developments regarding amalgamation. Tuesdays (7 March – 4 April) With Australia Day almost upon us, this is a good time to reflect on the first people of our country. The Indigenous traditional custodians of the Strathfield area are the Wangal people of the Darug Tribe, who are believed to have lived in the Sydney area for at least 10,000 years. The Strathfield district with its plentiful eucalypt trees, native grasses and access to the Cooks and Parramatta Rivers made it a likely place for gathering or hunting food by the Wangal people. As an important source of food, Strathfield may have been an integral part of the Wangal clan’s territory.
