ABOM Exam CME Application Pathway: 2027 Getting Started Guide

Are you a physician in the US or Canada interested in obesity medicine? Now is the perfect time to begin planning your own pathway to certification. Follow the steps below, and lay the foundation now to make 2027 the year you acquire the tools to help your patients with obesity.

STEP 1

Determine if you meet minimum eligibility requirements:

  • Are you a physician who completed a residency in the United States or Canada?
  • Do you hold an active, unrestricted medical license in the US or Canada?
  • Do you hold an active certification in an ABMS (or AOA equivalent) board?
If you answered ‘YES’ to all, you are eligible to apply for certification as an obesity medicine physician through the American Board of Obesity Medicine.
STEP 2

Create an account in the ABOM application portal. This is where you will input demographic information and upload your documentation.

Tip: Do this now so you don’t miss important communication about dates, deadlines, and fees.

STEP 3

Determine how you will accumulate the required 60 CME credits, including at least 30 credits through designated providers approved by ABOM. Visit the ABOM website to review all options.

Tip: There is no cap on the number of credits from designated providers that can be used toward the requirement. All 60 credits may come from designated providers.
STEP 4

Locate documentation to support the minimum requirements of active medical license, active certification in an ABMS board (US applicants only), and residency completion. Upload these through the application portal as soon as possible.

Tip: You will need electronic versions of all documentation. If you have hard copies, consider using a scanning app for your smartphone to easily convert them.

STEP 5

Mark your calendar so you don’t miss the application deadline. The early application deadline is July 10, 2027 ($1,500 fee). The final application deadline is August 7, 2027 ($1,750 fee). The exam will be administered October 12–26, 2027.

Tip: All CME credits must be earned and documented in order to submit an application. To qualify for the early deadline reduced fee, your application must be submitted, approved, and paid by July 10, 2027. The review process can take up to 48 hours, so don’t wait until the last minute.
