Subject to signing a partnership agreement, the University will be working with the Institute to develop a collaborative programme of research from early 2018. The work will be led by the Leeds Institute for Data Analytics with contributions from researchers and data scientists across the University. LifeInfo SurveyResearchers at LIDA have launched a major survey to see if people would be prepared to allow their lifestyle data to be matched against their health records. The survey aims to gauge whether members of the public support such large-scale data analysis and marks the start of what could be the biggest investigation ever into the interaction between lifestyle and health, with scientists saying it could provide important insights into cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Leeds OmicsOver the last decade there has been exponential growth in the use of large-scale technologies as a tool to understand a wide range of phenomena in the Biological and Medical Sciences. These technologies include (but are not limited to) genomics, transcriptomics and translatomics. At the University of Leeds we have a significant number of active researchers that fit under this "Omics" umbrella. Leeds Omics is a virtual research institute providing these researchers with the opportunity to interact at multiple levels and in a virtual and physical environment. Visiting Fellow: Prof Anne Vernez-MoudonIn September we had the pleasure of welcoming Anne Vernez-Moudon, Professor of Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Urban Design and Planning at the University of Washington. During her fellowship at LIDA, Prof Vernez-Moudon presented at ECTQG in York, met with students and researchers from LIDA to discuss potential collaborations and had the opportunity to explore the region. We encourage proposals from potential fellows, please contact lida@leeds.ac.uk Advanced Research Computing at LeedsThe ARC team provide and support a comprehensive Advanced Research Computing (ARC) support service for researchers in all faculties at the University of Leeds. The service consists of a large High Performance Computing (HPC or Supercomputing) resource consisting of several clusters which are used for all forms of predictive modelling, data analysis and simulation which are too large, too complex or too time consuming to be performed on a Desktop PC. Leeds Data Science SocietyThe Leeds Data Science Society celebrated its second birthday last month. They celebrated by reaching 300 subscribed members and securing sponsorship from BlackRock, KPMG and Hiscox Insurance. Data Analytics and SocietyThe ESRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Data Analytics and Society launched in September and we welcomed 23 new students across the four partner institutes. Leeds student Francesca Pontin shared her thoughts on the first few weeks of the programme. |
