Local Government Reform No Images? Click here Vol 4: Issue 24 - Wednesday 6 November 2019 Earlier this week the LGA provided its final submission to the State Government’s Local Government Reform Discussion Paper. Our submission was informed by the feedback we received from members through consultation, and is based on the following five principles:
I understand there are a range of positions across the sector on a number of these reform proposals, and many councils also provided their own submissions highlighting both concerns and opportunities. This is not the end of the process, but just the beginning. While we’ve expressed in-principle support for many of the Government’s reform ideas, we will need to consider the details, and work closely with the Government and Parliament to make sure councils aren’t burdened with excessive and costly compliance with little benefit for the communities we enable. The Government is expected to introduce a Bill into Parliament early next year, and the LGA will continue to consult with and advocate on behalf of members to ensure that any reforms are sensible, necessary, evidence-based, and will support councils to deliver better results. We are always in a better position to advocate and influence the Parliament when we are united. If you have any questions about our submission or the process from here please contact the LGA’s Local Government Reform Partner Andrew Lamb on 8224 2081 or at andrew.lamb@lga.sa.gov.au.
