Kerrie has a reputation as one of the most caring members on our PLC staff and is always willing to lend a hand to her colleagues. Greg celebrated the milestone of 50 years of teaching last term, and despite holding positions as Head of Department, Deputy Principal, and Principal, his love of teaching always drew him back to the classroom. Greg is well-known as a fit early riser who completes 20 sets of Jacob’s Ladder at 5.00 am every morning before offering extra maths support to students before school. Greg and Kerrie are unique in that they operate as one Mathematics teacher and students often have both teachers available to them in their classes. This arrangement has given the couple a great work-life balance and allowed Greg to pursue his love of surfing and spend time with his grandchildren. We know Greg and Kerrie will enjoy their break and we feel fortunate to have them form part of the fabric that makes PLC such a special school. - Mrs Chris Robinson, Deputy Principal Living for Others
The quote above is attributed to Pope Francis and reminds me of the importance to remain focussed on the needs of those around me. When we reflect on the people who have a significant impact on our lives, there would often be some who strive to celebrate the uniqueness and develop the gifts of those around them. They seek and find the spark in someone and kindle it to become a bonfire. As a PLC community, we value service and strive to find that spark, and on a personal level, we aspire to be of service and bear fruit wherever we are planted. - Rev Manie Strydom, Chaplain Year 10 Family Service Project – Ronald McDonald HouseThe Year 10 Family Service Project is supporting Perth Children’s Hospital, Ronald McDonald House Big Breakfast programme. PLC’s session at Ronald McDonald House commences at 7.30 am and is offered on the following dates for Term 4:
Further information on the programme and how to register can be found here. - Ms Chonny James, Director of Wellbeing Semester 2 is Off with a BangThe activity so far in the Junior School in Semester 2 has been significant. With our interrupted year, teachers are embracing the opportunities, so this week and next, we have eight excursions as well as JIGSSA Carnivals for the Year 4s, 5s and 6s. Additionally, the Schools Basketball Competition commences on Thursday with teams representing the School from Years 3 to 6. Year 6 PYP ExhibitionMost significantly, we have the Year 6 Primary Years Programme (PYP) Exhibition next Wednesday from 6.00 pm in the Junior School Swim and Recreation Centre. This exhibition is the culmination of the PYP that has been, for some of our students, a nine-year journey since Pre-Kindergarten. The exhibition demonstrates so much of what makes the PYP such an exceptional programme. What I appreciate most is that the PYP reflects that it takes a village to educate a child. Parents, class teachers, specialist teachers, and school leaders are all involved. Ms Cate Begbie and I have joined the Junior School teaching staff in being mentors for students to help guide them through the exhibition journey. Secondly, the exhibition reflects the trans-disciplinary nature of the PYP. I know that throughout this process, Art, Music, and Language B have been heavily involved in enriching the students' understanding of their ‘Central Idea.’ If you are unsure of these terms, or how they relate to your daughter’s learning, ask her, her class teacher, Mrs Jenny Rickwood, or myself to explain how we create the rich learning that the PYP framework provides. PLC AppJust a reminder that with the number of excursions, events, and information we need to share with you, it is important to check the PLC App regularly, or make sure your subscriptions are correct, so families do not miss important information and events. Farewell Kobie McGurkIt is again with mixed emotions I announce that Ms Kobie McGurk has been appointed as the Director of Sport at St Hilda’s. This is an excellent career opportunity for Ms McGurk in a role that suits her skills and experience. Ms McGurk has added so much to the School over 10 years in physical education and sport; just this year she worked hard to bring Daily Fun Fitness to the students. Ms McGurk begins this position in 2021, and we will farewell her before this time. - Mr Richard Wright, Head of Junior School Junior School Upcoming EventsJunior School Assembly - Years 1 to 6Date: Friday 23 October JIGSSA Athletics Carnival – Years 5 & 6Date: Tuesday 27 October Chapel - Years 3 to 6Date: Wednesday 28 October Year 6 PYP ExhibitionDate: Wednesday 28 October JIGSSA Athletics Carnival – Year 4Date: Thursday 29 October OCA Junior School STEM Room Launch & Morning TeaDate: Friday 6 November Congratulations 2021 Student OfficialsThis week started with the Induction Service for our new student officials for 2021 and I would like to thank the students, staff, and our Chair of Council, Mrs Claire Poll, for making the service so wonderful. You can watch the highlights video of the Induction Service here or view the photos from the day in the Gallery, here. Having spent the weekend on the Prefect Retreat with the Student Council, I know that the new officials are keen to make their mark on the School and they are buzzing with ideas for new initiatives. They are very focussed on making sure PLC is an inclusive environment and that we build on the culture and traditions that make our School so special. ExaminationsAfter a huge week for the graduating Year 12 Class of 2020 with their Valedictory Service and Dinner (you can see the photos here and the highlights video here), school has now finished for these students, however, there are still lots of students on campus studying hard for their upcoming examinations. Those students who are sitting either WACE or IB examinations have been provided with a copy of the examination rules and regulations. While the girls are familiar with these regulations, I would also encourage parents to speak to their daughters about this and to keep an eye on their daughter’s examination timetable. We want to make sure that all students arrive for their examinations early and are able to achieve their personal best. Year 10 Social CancelledIt is with regret that we advise that the Year 10 Social (Class of 2021) has been cancelled. There was a clash of events with an external organiser of an U18s concert, which was postponed six months ago. After surveying the students, it was clear many already purchased tickets and therefore, could not attend. The good news is that the Year 11 Dinner Dance will be occurring on Friday 5 March 2021. We know that this will be a lovely event for the girls and their partners. Assessment Schedules for Term 4Students in Years 7, 8, and 9 have been provided with their Term 4 Assessment Schedule. This is created for our younger students to help them build the tools to be organised. Please find the links below for parents and guardians to access this as well.
Our students in Year 11 and Year 12 have a diverse range of subjects and pathways. The information relating to their specific course assessments can be found in SEQTA, which is visible to both the students and their parents. - Miss Rebecca Watts, Head of Senior SchoolSenior School Important DatesCreative Arts and Technology Exhibition Opening NightDate: Thursday 22 October Year 10 DanceDate: Friday 30 October Year 12 Support Your Daughter EveningDate: Wednesday 4 November Student AchievementsDon’t Medal with BellaCongratulations to Bella Van Ingen-Kal (Year 9) who competed in the WA State Karate Championships on Sunday 18 October and came second in the Kadet Kumite division.
