An off-the-grid house high in the hills in Kāpiti

"Welcome to the house that Ben built," says Jacqui Tuckey of her off-the-grid home high in the hills above the Kāpiti Coast.

Three Bens to be exact: architectural designer Ben Gilpin, builder Ben Ryder and solar power expert Ben Stanton.

"It made it a little confusing on site sometimes," says the artist whose paintings, sculptures and furniture pieces are dotted throughout the 278sqm home.

MAJOR INVESTMENT IN THE FUTURE OF OUR DRINKING WATER SUPPLY

A $16 million investment in water supply, safety and resilience is underway in the Kāpiti Coast District. That’s on top of the $9 million spent in 2015 on the first stage of work to upgrade the Waikanae Water Treatment Plant. 

Martyn Cole, Water & Wastewater Asset Manager says the Council is committed to providing safe, clean, reliable and resilient drinking water supplies for the community.  

“That’s why we’re continuing to invest in an ongoing programme of planned improvements to our water treatment plants in Waikanae, Ōtaki and Hautere to help meet this commitment.” 

Mr Cole says the work is already underway and is expected to be completed in 2022.

Round two - Grumpy Old Men

The Grumpy Old Men project is underway. Men from around the Kapiti / Horowhenua / Mana region who want to change but in a way that makes sense to them will gather fortnightly to get and stay on track. They will meet from 10:30am to 12:30pm at venues around the Kapiti Coast and maybe even embark on adventures oputside the region.

They will come with different goals and will work with others who help keep each other on track. Everyone is different and a range of solutions will help tailor the best way to help each man get on track.

They will learn about how to make simple changes that will have an enormous impact of their life. They will start a journey that brings them lifelong happiness, health and companionship.

They will learn the skills to manage their lives, manage everyday stress and bring back that champion. But not because of what they have done, but because of what they are.
