20 years of Make Smoking History + our new campaign No images? Click here November 2020Make Smoking History turns 20!We recently celebrated our 20th anniversary. To mark this milestone, the team hosted a morning tea to reflect on achievements in tobacco control over the last two decades, and to acknowledge our funders, and a number of individuals and organisations that we have worked alongside. Voice BoxCoinciding with our anniversary, we launched a graphic new advertising campaign titled, 'Voice Box'. This campaign highlights what lays ahead for people who have to have their voice box removed because of cancer caused by smoking. Making tobacco control a priorityThe Public Health Research and Practice Journal recently released a special edition on tobacco control. The issue hammers home the dangers of complacency and the need to make tobacco control a priority again. It includes an article co-authored by our very own Campaign Coordinator, Sarah Beasley, on what makes an effective anti-tobacco campaign. Is the government rolling in smokers’ cash?About 14% of adults in Australia, that’s over 2 million people, smoke daily. A large proportion of the price of tobacco is made up of tax. So is the government rolling in smokers’ cash? Quitting resources for people in prisonApproximately 75% of people in prisons in Australia are current smokers. In collaboration with the Justice Health and Forensic Mental Health Network (NSW), we have produced tailored resources to assist people in WA prisons to reduce and quit smoking. These resources will be distributed to prisons currently partnering with Make Smoking History or can be downloaded from the Make Smoking History website. New online smoking cessation training coursesBrief Advice Essentials Training is now available for people working in community and health settings in WA. The essentials training is designed to equip staff with the skills, confidence and knowledge to have fast, simple and effective smoking cessation conversations with people who smoke.
