Links eNewsletter - Term 3 Week 8 Dear valued member of the PLC community, A Message From the Deputy PrincipalThe end of this term signals many things; the beginning of spring, Year 11 and 12 exams, the holidays, and for our Year 10 students, it is an especially momentous time. For them, it is an end of an era and, for many, it is the start of their memory-making adventures on Year 10 Quest. After completing their exams this week, they will have officially completed Year 10 and will be starting Year 11 content in Term 4, heading into the final years of their education. From Saturday 18 September, many students will be exiting Perth to some of WA’s most extraordinary and unique regions on one of the three programmes - Ningaloo, Karijini, and Walpole. Despite the limits on travel, the students will be travelling as much as 1,000 kilometres from home and visiting far-flung regions very different from their normal surroundings. There will also be 32 Year 10s going on Teach, Learn, Grow to Esperance and Mandurah wherein the students will take on leadership roles as tutors and mentors to local primary school children. I will be accompanying the Esperance programme which partners with Nulsen Primary school to improve the educational outcomes and aspirations of rural and remote students. While COVID-19 has prevented our usual international tours from going ahead, there is a silver lining in staying local. By focussing on exploring Western Australia, we are discovering a newfound appreciation for the extraordinary size, natural beauty, cultural richness, and biodiversity of our own state. We really are very fortunate to be able to travel, especially reflecting on the incredibly limited online-only schooling being offered elsewhere in Australia right now. Indeed, sometimes it is the simpler pleasures of sunsets, beaches, forests, campfires, and the starry night sky that make for the most profound and long-lasting memories. At PLC, we take pride in being able to offer these incredible experiences alongside the school curriculum and to challenge students in ways that develop their independence, sense of self, and appreciation of the people and the world around them. Memories were also shared and made last Thursday when the current Year 12 Lifers opened letters they had written to themselves in Year 1, back in 2010. For Audrey, one of her six-year-old predictions was spot on! Little Audrey said she wanted to become a cook and Audrey is now an outstanding cake baker and decorator who is pursuing a career in this field. - Chris Robinson – Deputy Principal The Term 4 Co-curricular programme information and SignUps for Junior and Senior School will go live on Friday 17 September at 5.00 pm. We have had Scotch College boys visiting, an incursion of a cow from Browne’s Dairy for our Year 4 students as well as excursions for both our Year 2s and Year 6s. IGSSA Athletics CarnivalWe were incredibly lucky to have such wonderful weather for the IGSSA Athletics Carnival on Tuesday. Well done to all the students who gave their best and represented PLC with pride. It was great to hear all the students cheering each other on and for our reserves who stepped up to help out where needed. There was clear camaraderie in the stands and a strong sense of school spirit. Congratulations to our Year 10s who won their pennant, Annie (Year 11) who broke the 400m record, and to our tireless Athletics staff who did a great job preparing and coaching our teams. QuestOur Year 10 students head off on the final Quests at the end of this week. I hope that each and every one of the students attending enjoys the experience, embraces the challenge, and returns safely with memories to last them a lifetime. For our students who have already attended Quest, I hope you have a good break and that you get time to relax. - Rebecca Watts – Head of Senior School End of Term 3
What Happened This Week in the Boarding HouseBuilding ConnectionsLast weekend, we began our amazing ABC (About Being Connected) @PLC Programme, led by the fabulous Lucy Loxton, which aims to support our new Year 7 boarders arriving in 2022. The new boarders were provided with opportunities to make connections with each other, current boarding Year 7s as well as boarding and school staff. The goal of this programme is to prepare the new Year 7s for a smooth and successful transition into school and boarding. On Saturday, the girls enjoyed a tour of the Boarding House and played many fun games with assistance from our Year 11 Boarding House Prefects and current Year 7s. ABC@PLC is a term-long programme that extends beyond the activities led on Saturday, with initiatives such as online lessons with the PLC laptops, aimed at getting the girls familiar with the technology and learning practices as well as forging friendships. We were thrilled to welcome these girls into our boarding community and we're so pleased to see them enjoying their time in the Boarding House. - Katherine Hazlewood – Deputy of Wellbeing and Pastoral Care External Volunteer Opportunity - Boab NetworkThe Boab Network is a volunteer group based at the Uniting Church Floreat that supports young people each school holidays from the Mowanjum Community near Derby. PLC has been supporting Boab Network for three years and this year, along with other volunteers, we will be supervising and accompanying twelve students from Mowanjum as they explore activities around Perth. It is likely that the students from the community have never visited Perth before. Volunteers over 18 years of age are required to hold a Working with Children Check.
Please click here for detailed information. To register, complete this application form (specifying which day/s you would like to volunteer for) and return to Boab Network directly. Birthing Kits Service Opportunity Years 7 - 11This is the third year PLC is participating in Birthing Kits for Australia (BKFA) Project led by IB CAS students. In 2021, it will be led by Year 11 students Antigone and Alice. What is it?Birthing kits are small packages containing seven fundamental items for women in developing countries, to have a safe and sanitary birth. The not-for-profit NGO offers volunteers to either donate or build birthing kits, which BKFA then sends to particular countries around the world that are less economically developed and have high maternal mortality rates due to unsanitary births. The organisation’s goal aligns directly with the UN’s Goal #3: Good Health & Wellbeing - By 2030, reduce the global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100,000 live births. Since their foundation in 1995 by Joy O’Dazy and the Adelaide Hills Zonta club, they have been very successful in their efforts, distributing over 2 million kits in 2019. Purpose and goalThe reason why Antigone and Alice chose to host this service project at PLC is because they are passionate about empowering women all around the world and advocating for equality, whether it be supporting women and their rights or aiding those who do not have the same privileges we do. Their aim is to create 200 birthing kits altogether as a PLC community, with the overall objective to create and spread awareness about this severely overlooked global issue. What does the activity consist of?During the service activity, there will be a brief presentation about the project, then stations will be set up where students will be able to each have a role in the assembly process of putting together the kits and be able to have a go at the different roles. Students will learn how valuable and essential each element of the kit is, what its purpose is, and how each can drastically increase a woman’s and her baby’s survival during labour. How you can help?Antigone and Alice are offering a very rare and unique service opportunity whereby your actions will have a direct visible impact on the lives of many women around the world, especially during our current circumstances with COVID-19. This service activity will not only serve as proof of how much impact teamwork and collaboration can create, but also how small steps can lead to big change. If you are interested in getting involved in this project:
There are only 40 spots available, therefore it’s a first-in, first-served basis! Additional notes: If you do not manage or are unable to take part in this project, but you still want to get involved with the organisation, then you can either donate directly to BKFA or arrange your own Birthing Kit Assembly Day at home. - Chonny James – Director of Wellbeing PLC Open Garden Day Tickets Now On SaleThe 2021 PLC Open Garden Day showcases five of Peppermint Grove’s most spectacular gardens as they blossom in spring, over 40 incredible local market stalls, entertainment, activities and more!
