Top 100 Golf Courses "BiteSize" - June 2015

It was impossible to ignore the hullabaloo that surrounded the 2015 U.S. Open at Chambers Bay earlier this month. As we look forward to the Open Championship at St Andrews in July (which we’re sure will be less controversial), we’d like to share Ron Fream’s opinion… “Chambers Bay surely does need some remedial help; so too does the USGA senior executive staff.”

Atlantic Coast Links Golf Trip

Richard Smith from Knoxville has been travelling to the UK and Ireland for the past thirty years to play the region’s best golf courses. The Atlantic links layouts along England’s Southwest coast from Somerset to Devon and Cornwall had intrigued him for many years. He was looking for an opportunity to play here, especially after he and his wife Ruth became enamoured with Cornwall through the BBC TV show “Doc Martin”.

Top 10 Golf Courses in Cumbria 2015

Silloth on Solway Golf Club has featured in the national and GB&I Top 100 rankings since time began and it’s an undiluted pure links experience that is set well off the beaten track on the Solway Coast. We recommend a pilgrimage because it’s a seminal golfing experience. Our recent poll resulted in a few changes in the top half of the county’s latest Top 10.

Top 5 Golf Courses in Central Scotland 2015

Stirling, an old Tom Morris course that was extended to an 18-hole layout by Willie Fernie more than a century ago, retains its number 1 position in our Central Scotland rankings. It holds off a strong challenge from Glenbervie, a 1930s James Braid design that was home to the Scottish region of the PGA for many years.

The Green Journey

Javier Pintos, our Argentine Correspondent, flew to Belfast to lead a group of twenty-four golfers around the north of Ireland. The schedule was to play six consecutive days, tackling the two classics – Royal Portrush (Dunluce) and Royal County Down (Championship) – along with the Glashedy and Old courses at Ballyliffin, Portstewart (Strand) and the beautiful Ardglass.

Top 10 Golf Courses in Angus & Dundee in 2015

Since Top 100 Golf Courses introduced its Scottish Regional Rankings in 2012, the Top 10 positions for Angus & Dundee have remained rather static, which hopefully means we’re arranging the courses in the right order. Indeed, in this latest edition of our chart, the top nine places remain exactly the same as last time. Naturally, the Championship course at Carnoustie leads the way at number 1.

We’ve just updated our Top 10 chart for Dumfries & Galloway and, as indication of the quality of courses in this area, the top four layouts in this Best in Region listings also feature in our Top 100 rankings for Scotland. Southerness holds onto the number 1 position in our regional classifications and this formidable links is rightly regarded as a modern masterpiece.

Top 10 Golf Courses in Lanarkshire 2015

If links golf is what you’re looking for then Lanarkshire’s hardly going to be a golfing destination of first choice as this land locked region boasts no coastal layouts within its boundaries in the central lowlands of Scotland. There are over thirty tasty inland courses to choose from however and we’ve just updated our rankings, listing what we believe to be the best ten layouts in the area.

Top 5 Golf Courses in Glasgow 2015

Climbing one place to the number 1 position, the Cawder course at Cawder Golf Club in Bishopbriggs was set out by James Braid in the early 1930s but it has been revised a number of times over the years, leaving little of the original design in place. Nonetheless, the course found favour with many of the respondents to our recent survey, propelling it to the top of the chart.

Top 5 Golf Courses in the Borders 2015

Looking at our newly updated standings for this region, The Roxburghe retains its number 1 spot which is no real surprise as this course has held a national ranking since we first established a Scottish Top 100 chart seven years ago. Laid out within an enormous 50,000-acre estate, this impressive 18-layout was also the host venue for the Scottish Seniors Open from 2001 to 2005.

Top 10 Golf Courses in Renfrewshire 2015

We maintain a Top 10 chart for Renfrewshire and have just completed a survey to update our rankings for this strong golfing district. East Renfrewshire holds onto the number 1 position, which was to be anticipated perhaps as it has long held a prominent position in our Scottish top 100 listing.
