Student Tip - Phone Interviews Many job applications are now submitted online. Once an employer sifts through the best cover letters/resumes, a phone interview is usually the next step in the hiring process. Phone interviews are typically short interactions designed to help the company to decide whether or not to schedule a face-to-face interview. These can be intimidating since you won't be able to use many nonverbal cues. Here are some tips to help you successfully convey your qualifications over the phone: 1. Select an appropriate location – You want to perform your interview in a quiet, empty room. Background noise, such as typing, dogs barking, or music, can be distracting to both you and the interviewer. You can reserve an office space in OSI/OASA through Katelyn Jerles for these interviews. 2. Dress like you would for an in-person interview – Even though the interviewer won't be able to see what you're wearing, dressing professionally will help put you in an appropriate mindset for the interview. It's hard to share your top professional skills while lounging on the couch in your pajamas. 3. Answer the phone by stating your name – For example, "Hello, this is Albert Gator." This avoids confusion at the beginning of the interview and lets you start on a positive, confident note. No more, "Her is I, she is me, This is her" mumbo jumbo. 4. Smile – Even though interviewers can't see it, smiling brings energy and excitement to your voice. Interviewers like when you sound happy and genuinely interested to talk to them. 5. Have your resume nearby to reference - Use your resume to remind yourself of your experiences and accomplishments. Make sure to reference these when you are answering interview questions. 6. Be concise - You won't have any non-verbal cues to know when to stop speaking. Your answers should typically be between 30-90 seconds. When you're done, pause and give the interviewer an adequate chance to respond before speaking again. If you're unsure if you should keep talking - ask! Ask, "Did that fully answer your question?" The interviewer will be honest and let you know. 7. Follow-up - Make sure to ask for the interviewers contact information so that you can follow-up with a thank you email within the next 24 hours.
