NNYLN Annual Meeting - May 26th

NNYLN's 51st Annual Meeting will be held on Thursday, May 26th from 9am - 3pm in Lake Placid at the Mirror Lake Inn.

The morning speaker will be Jeff Mixter from OCLC's Research Division. He will be presenting "Linked Data 101," a crash course on Linked Data, its value and usage, and how it can be utilized by libraries.

Additionally, member library staff from our region will be doing flash presentations on innovative projects occuring in their libraries. These include:

*Going From the 20th Century to the 21st Century in Two Not-So-Easy Steps*
*Electronic Remodeling*
*360 Cameras in Libraries*
*Libraries and the NYS Social Studies Frameworks*
*Historic Libraries: The National Register and Beyond*
*Public Library Youth Activity Space*

The afternoon speaker will be Linda Bull from the New York State Archives. She will be presenting "How Secure Are Your Records? Cyber Security For Libraries," which will discuss how to properly secure and defend library computer systems against cyber attacks and unauthorized access.

The Annual Meeting will also feature the business meeting, and the presentation of the 26th Annual NNYLN Award for Excellence in Library Service.

The Annual Meeting is free to attend. However, registration is required.

11th Annual NNYLN Award for Outstanding Student Workers

The staff of participating NNYLN libraries are invited to identify students to receive this award. These students exemplify the standards of service and professionalism that make them role models for all student workers in libraries.

Full and part-time students are eligible to be awarded by supervisory personnel from the participating libraries. Only one student worker can be awarded per library.

Awardees will exhibit these characteristics:

* Excellent Attendance Record
* Outstanding Patron Service Skills and Colleague Interaction
* Strong Leadership Among Peers
* Responsibility
* Interest and Initiative

Awardees will be presented with a token gift, as well as a certificate suitable for mention on resumes.

ESLN Webinar: Empire Archival Discovery Cooperative Info Session and Demo

Join Training Coordinator, Jen Palmentiero and Project Manager, Deirdre Joyce as they discuss and demonstrate the beta prototype for the forthcoming Empire Archival Discovery Cooperative (or Empire ADC) a project of the Empire State Library Network (ESLN).

Since 2013, ESLN has collaborated with archival professionals from around the state of New York to build a platform that can serve as an index and repository for finding aids created by holding institutions from around the state.

The information session will cover the history and background of the project, discuss the workflows for potential contributors, review how interested parties will soon be able to contribute and create their own encoded finding aids, and – finally – demonstrate the EADitor tool.

This webinar will take place on May 11, from 10am - 11am and is free to attend.

ASKUS 24/7 Recognition

 ​The ASKUS 24/7 service asks that each library strive to maintain and "answering percentage" of 75%. In April North Country Community College had a 500% answering percentage, leading the state in their category.

In addition, Mary Cabral of Clarkson University had the highest number of questions answered, providing 29 answers. Further recognition is extended to Allison Benkwitt of SUNY Plattsburgh and Brian O'Connor of North Country Community College for being in the top 10 librarians who picked up the highest number of questions in April. 

 

NNYLN Special Collections & Archives Conference

NNYLN's 2016 Special Collections & Archives Conference will be held on Friday June 17th from 10am - 2pm in Watertown. 

Further information about this conference, including speakers, will be forthcoming in an individual mailing.

This conference is free to attend.

NNYLN Webinar: Using the NYS Historic Newspapers Website

NNYLN will be conducting a webinar on the basic usage, searching, and navigation of the NYS Historic Newspapers Website on June 2, from 10am - 11am. This webinar is free to attend, but registration is required.
