Celebrating Our Sportswomen This week has been one of the busiest and most exciting in PLC’s sporting calendar. The marquee event was, of course, the Senior School Inter-House Athletics Carnival on Tuesday and I think we can all agree it was a cracking day on the track. It was fantastic to see so many of you giving your absolute best, whether that be competing, participating, supporting, marching or cheering. Congratulations to Ferguson, who took home the trophy for Champion House. In addition to the Carnival, we’ve had a full week of sport with IGSSA
Netball and Hockey, JIGSSA Winter Games days, and have both the NAIDOC Staff versus Student basketball game and the IGSSA Cross Country to look forward to tomorrow. It’s wonderful for me to watch you pursue personal bests, having a go, and finding ways to contribute. As Coach of the Year 7/8 A Netball team, I also need to give those girls a special shout-out for putting in their best performance of the season yesterday, and taking home a win against Perth College. Women Sport Australia (WSA) is a national advocacy organisation that fearlessly stands up for all women in sport. One
of its main objectives is to ensure Australia’s sportswomen are portrayed as the gladiators they are. Traditionally, images in the media have depicted elite sportswoman in smiling stationary poses, often with a ball under their arm, or a bat over their shoulder. This year, WSA have introduced for the first time, the ‘Women in Sport Photo Action Awards’, with the aim of showcasing the skill, strength and athleticism of our nation's sportswomen in action. In this spirit, our Communications and Engagement Department have taken up the challenge of capturing our PLC sportswomen in full flight during their sporting endeavours this week.
You can view some more of the best action shots here. The value of participation in a physical co-curricular activity is evident within our own student wellbeing data, where students who participate in a physical co-curricular activity at PLC report, on average, a five percent increase across many of the wellbeing measures. One of the co-curricular physical activities that contribute to this data is dance, and we are all looking forward to the Endeavour Dance Showcase which is on in the Hazel Day Drama Centre this Friday and Saturday. Our IGSSA Cross
Country team have been putting in the hard yards at training since the beginning of the year, and I have no doubt they will represent PLC admirably tomorrow. The event is at Alderbury Reserve, Perry Lakes, with the first race commencing at 2.45 pm. Go Team PLC! - Ms Chonny James, Director of Wellbeing

Forgive and forget"We must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive. He who is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love. There is some good in the worst of us and some evil in the best of us."
- Martin Luther King Jnr Most people would be able to think of a situation where someone hurt them deeply, perhaps even scarred them, for example: families who were very close might not speak with one another after their girls had a fight, or former partners in a firm might deliberately damage the reputation of the other after a heated debate, and try to financially ruin the other party. When we focus on the wrongs and the hurt, it impacts our wellbeing and spirituality – it even has a physiological impact on us. We can choose to remain stuck in the past, or find a solution to help us move forward. A positive solution could be to ask the other party to forgive you if
you wronged them, and to forgive someone when they ask for forgiveness. This doesn’t mean that everything will go back to the way it was before, nor does it right every wrong, but it may relieve some of the toxicity in our lives, and release us to, once again, love and live to the full. As we teach our children life skills, let’s also teach them to live freely, love deeply and forgive abundantly! - Rev Manie Strydom, Chaplain
Senior School Winter Warmer - Term 2 AppealPLC’s culture of supporting our community and those less fortunate, continues in Term 2 as we support various projects in partnership with the Australian Red Cross. The deadline for donations has been extended to Friday 28 June. Donations will be collected in House Tutor groups.
Live Below the Line Live Below the Line is in its sixth year at PLC. This is an opportunity for students to experience first-hand what it is like to live below the poverty line on $2 per day for two days, whilst fundraising through sponsorship for Oaktree. This year, it will be happening on Monday 1 July and Tuesday 2 July. There will be an information session in the PLC Lighthouse Studio 1 at Lunchtime, on Thursday 20 June, with recipe ideas on how you can stretch your $2 further. For information on Oaktree, and to

Formal Dresses and Accessories - Thank you! Thank you to our incredibly generous community for supporting our recent 'Dress Drive'.
The extended PLC community rallied to donate over 195 formal dresses, accessories, shoes and handbags, that were provided to girls who might otherwise not have the opportunity to attend their formal. Thank you for all the support and items that were generously delivered to the PLC Lighthouse last week, they have been gratefully received. "No one has ever become poor by giving." - Anne Frank
- Linda Malone, Head of Service and Community Partnerships
Public SpeakingThis week, our Year 6 students took part in the first PLC Speakers’ Challenge. The girls had to write and present a four-minute speech on a topic of their choice. There were a wide variety of topics covered, including 'Homelessness', "Creation According to the Ancient Greeks' and 'The Terrors of Public Speaking'. The girls who participated showed great commitment, effort and were real risk-takers. Congratulations to Kaitlyn Sin - first place, Edie Goody - second place, and Elise Wright - third place. These three girls
will represent PLC Junior School at the IPSHA Speakers’ Challenge, at Scotch College on Wednesday 3 July, competing against the top speakers from Independent Schools around Western Australia. Public speaking is a life-long skill that is required throughout schooling and in many careers. From 'toolbox meetings' on worksites, to the Federal Cabinet, the ability and confidence to speak publicly is a critical skill. I believe all students should develop these skills as part of their education, and I look forward to further developing the public speaking opportunities available to our girls in our Junior School. Play Spaces After School When I first arrived at PLC Junior School, the Parent Representatives spoke to me about students being able to use the play spaces and equipment outside of school hours. I believe that sharing play spaces is an important part of building and strengthening our School community, and have encouraged the girls to use the play areas in their own time. Unfortunately, some spaces in the Sensory Garden have not been treated well outside of school hours. This has affected our Pre-Kindy class, as many of their plants have been damaged, as has some equipment. The students were upset that their play space had been treated like this. I do not want to lose our amazing environment as a community strengthening tool, but I ask all members of the
community using the play spaces to supervise your children, and care for our environment, as it is such an important teacher, particularly in the early years.

Athletics CarnivalCongratulations to all our wonderful girls who committed to give their best and to enjoy the Athletics carnival in the spirit in which it is intended. What began as a very cold and challenging Tuesday morning, morphed into a magnificent day which students and staff seemed to thoroughly enjoy. A number of records were broken, and special mention should be made of Annie Pfeiffer (Year 9) who broke four records across the day and Ashley Spencer (Year 10) who broke two. The competitive section of the program culminated in the relays, which are always very exciting, and the
support offered by each of the Houses for their representatives was vocal and enthusiastic. It is good to see the popularity of the participation events, where girls who are not athletically inclined, can still be a part of the day and contribute to their House, both in spirit and in points. Events such as the Inter-house Swimming Carnival, Inter-house Cross Country and Inter-house Athletics, are a very special and important part of the fabric of our School. They unite the girls and provide avenues for expression that are outside the usual academic pursuits of the school. For this reason, it is important that they are valued and supported as an intrinsic part of the school diary. It is an expectation that all of our girls will attend these days and remain with us until the end of the day as a part of the PLC experience.
Prefect VotingOur Year 11 students have all been invited to consider applications for Leadership positions for 2020. The process has begun this week and will continue for much of Term 3. We offer four Stages of nominations and opportunities for the girls to reach out to the rest of the school, to outline their goals and their abilities for their chosen positions. I invite all the girls to consider these opportunities and to take the necessary steps if they wish to complete these applications. The closing date for Stages 1 and 2, is Thursday 1 July. Good luck to all those who apply. RemindersAwardsThe Years 11 and 12 Academic Awards for Semester 1 will be presented at the Principal's Assembly, this Friday 21 June, beginning at 8.40 am. The Year 10 Academic Awards Assembly for Semester 1, will be held at the HDDC on Monday 1 July, beginning at 8.30 am. AbsencesIf your daughter is likely to arrive after 10.00 am in the morning, please notify the school through email, or the absences message line. As far as requests for leave, it is important for parents to know that in order for their daughter not to have any consequences for missed assessments, it is crucial that they make their request at least a week before the leave is taken. Otherwise there is a 10% per day deduction, to a maximum of 30% for a late assessment.
- Jennifer Crisp, Head of Senior School

Year Group: 7 to 12
Sitting Time: After school 3.45 pm – 5.15 pm
Closing Date to apply: Friday 28 June

It is a collaboration by the girls, their teachers, and choreographers, who have together produced a spectacular evening of dance. Our dancers have put their blood, sweat and tears into creating Endeavour, and are proud to be performing
