Click here Happening | July preview| Tēnā koutou katoa, Things are ramping up at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery with a full suite of Len Lye exhibitions now open, including the largest yet exhibition of Len Lye’s film practice: The Absolute Truth of the Happiness Acid. The Len Lye Cinema has a great line-up of films, and public programmes and events kick-off again in July. It has been truly energizing to welcome you back into the building and the team is looking forward to connecting with you further, whether that’s through Seniors, Sense Art, Family Art, The Art of Dance, The Bubble Project, or any of the other ways to engage with your Gallery. With a heavy heart, we’d also like to take this opportunity to bid you a very fond farewell. During lockdown we were given the opportunity to move back to Canada to lead a new museum of modern and contemporary art on the prairies, Remai Modern. We’ve loved our time in Taranaki and will be forever grateful for the great kōrero we’ve shared. We leave the Gallery in an energized and focused position, and hope to connect with you again in the future. Noho ora mai, Aileen Burns & Johan Lundh Exhibitions Candice Lin: Pigs & Poison This survey exhibition by LA-based artist Candice Lin presents newly commissioned and existing works to explores legacies of Chinese migration and the interconnected cultivation of crops like tobacco, sugar cane, poppy, and fungi. Lin looks at how the racialized language around plants and their use, parallel narratives of virality and contamination. Pigs and Poison will premiere at the Govett-Brewster in early August. New artworks are commissioned by Govett-Brewster Art Gallery; Spike Island, Bristol, UK; and China's Guangdong Times Museum. Len Lye: The Absolute Truth of the Happiness Acid The most comprehensive survey of the artist’s experimental, internationally acclaimed filmmaking, the ‘happiness acid’ invites us inside the films within the gallery environment. Artists 'In Residence' Introducing our 2020 From more than 160 applications, we are pleased to announce our 2020 Artists ‘In Residence’, who will take up month-long residencies in their own homes or studios. Over the coming months we will be working with New Zealand-based artists Sorawit Songsataya, Meg Porteous and Yona Lee on virtual residencies, with their created artworks to be exhibited across the Gallery's digital platforms. Get involved The Art of Dance II We're kicking off the next phase of The Art of Dance II, with this video by New Plymouth-born dance artist Cameron McMillan, inviting entrants into the Gallery to film dances to our exhibitions. That call ends on 18 July, with a big screen event of all the submissions to thank entrants, and also launch The Art of Music. Find out more. The Bubble Project: What better way to showcase The Bubble Project short films than with a big screen event at the Len Lye Cinema on 18 July? Our panel of NZ film industry talent are reviewing entries. so stay tuned for more details to help us celebrate those that contributed to this community project. 'Find It In The City' Trail Over the July school holidays, children and families can take part in this free, fun event in New Plymouth, exploring the city's cultural gems, including community galleries, street art and Coastal Walkway. Those that complete the trail also go in a draw to win some great prizes. Pick up a map from participating venues like Govett-Brewster, Puke Ariki or TSB Showplace and go exploring between 4-19 July. Upcoming highlights NZQA Top Art 2020 This touring exhibition presents the best of NCEA Level 3 student portfolios that achieved Excellence in Visual Arts. The exhibition features work by local students Gemma Clarges and Esmeralda Dalgleish. Len Lye Curator Talk + Birthday Surprise Mark Len Lye's birthday - the artist would have turned 119 on this date - with a walk and talk alongside Len Lye Curator Paul Brobbel, to explore 'The Absolute Truth of the Happiness Acid'. Those attending the day's curator talk and family art will be invited to our birthday surprise... School Holiday Art Drop in with your kids during the July school holidays to make art that surprises and inspires. Young Visionaries Term 3 Weekly after school art classes where kids are inspired by great art. Sense Art Our touch and audio described tours of current exhibitions for visually impaired visitors. Cinema Len Lye Centre Cinema The Govett-Brewster’s very own boutique cinema offers a unique mix of current art house favourites, cult and classic titles including $5 Wednesday sessions. And in great news for cinema buffs, the Govett-Brewster will be exclusively hosting New Zealand International Film Festival screenings between 24 Jul - 4 Aug.
