NAIDOC Edition To celebrate this year’s NAIDOC theme, ‘Because of her, we can!’, the Victorian Aboriginal Economic Board has released a number of videos celebrating Aboriginal businesswomen in Victoria. These videos feature our Co-Chair Karen Milward, and Laura Thompson, Sarai Roe, Jody Barney, Perina Drummond, Janis Constable and Denni Francisco. The videos were developed by Aboriginal business Little Rocket and will be posted on the Aboriginal Victoria Facebook page over the next week Aboriginal Economic Development in the Latrobe Valley On 27 June 2018, over 80 people attended the Board’s event ‘Aboriginal Economic Development in the Valley’. Held in Traralgon, attendees included Traditional Owners, Aboriginal community members, members of the business community, local councils and employment providers. The day was facilitated by Ms Jirra Harvey, and included discussions about opportunities for Aboriginal economic development in the Latrobe Valley, pathways to Aboriginal employment, how to improve procurement processes, and supports for current or aspiring Aboriginal business owners. The Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, the Hon Natalie Hutchins MP, announced the Board's Latrobe Valley Landmark Research Project. The project seeks to ensure that Aboriginal people are at the heart of the economic development opportunities in the Latrobe Valley. Project partners will be announced soon and will work closely with local Aboriginal community members, groups, businesses and other stakeholders to call out gaps and opportunities for Aboriginal economic development. The Board would like to thank Mr Ronald Edwards Pepper for Welcoming us all to Gunaikurnai Country, and to everyone who participated in the day. It is hoped that these conversations continue through the research and results of the Latrobe Valley Landmark Research Project. Small Business Festival Events The Victorian Government’s Small Business Festival will be held across the state in August 2018.
