11-17 Columbia Lane, Homebush
A Planning Proposal is on exhibition until 12 October 2017 for 11-17 Columbia Lane, Homebush seeking an amendment to the Strathfield Local Environmental Plan (SLEP) 2012 to:
- Rezone the site from R4 High Density Residential to B4 Mixed Use;
- Increase the maximum height of buildings from 32m to 80m; and
- Increase the maximum floor space ratio from 2.7:1 to 5:1.
- Inadequate justification for the excessive proposed heights and densities which do not correspond with adjacent buildings.
- Compliance with the building separation, solar access and ventilation requirements of the Apartment Design Guide are questionable.
- Poor amenity of the units, including privacy, solar access and noise from the adjacent rail line.
- Compromised communal open space which is overshadowed and bisected, preventing the provision of a single consolidated quality and useable open space adjacent to the apartments.
- The 9 storey podium that wraps around the corner of Nipper Street and Gramophone Lane does not provide a pedestrian friendly environment at the street level.
- Inadequate traffic assessment which fails to consider the cumulative potential traffic from surrounding sites if they were developed and no assessment of weekend traffic undertaken which exceeds weekday traffic.
- Other feasible options with a more desirable outcome have not been adequately considered.

Paul Wilson – Development and Compliance Officer
Council’s longest serving employee is retiring after over half a century of service to Council and Strathfield's residents.
Paul Wilson started his career with Strathfield Council in 1965, as a Trainee Health and Building Surveyor. Over the next 52 years, Paul climbed the ranks and accomplished a number of achievements. In 1968, Paul assisted the then Chief Inspector with drafting the Strathfield Planning Scheme Ordinance, the first of its kind. Paul was then appointed as Chief Inspector himself, a position he held for 18 years and at the time was the youngest Chief Inspector in the metropolitan area. Paul also drafted a number of Council Codes and was the Council representative on the Consultative Committee, Occupational Health and Safety Committee and Local Government Recycling Committee.
Whilst Paul hangs up his hat as Council’s Development and Compliance Officer, his fellow colleagues take theirs off in recognition of his dedication and hard work. Council sincerely thanks Paul for his invaluable contribution and wish him a long and healthy retirement

Verani
Verani is a rare style of house in Strathfield. It is one of only three terrace style buildings in the area. This two storey Victorian house was built in 1888 for David Hazlewood and represents the range of good quality housing built in the area in the late nineteenth century. Verani was identified as heritage significant in the Strathfield Heritage Study in 1986.
