World Cup Champions for 2020 Dear Colleagues Vale Mark Smith It was with great sadness that we marked the passing of our Chair, Mark, in September this year. Mark had been with Enactus Australia since 2007, and for the majority of that time he chaired our Board. His passion for Enactus; his commitment to ensuring our on-going growth and development; his integrity and his business acumen were unmatched, and recognised not only here at home but internationally through his role as Chair of the Asia-Pacific Region on the Council of Country Board Chairs. We shall miss his guiding hand, his warmth and his good humour and our thoughts are with his family. ____________________________________________ Welcome to our November Newsletter, and I am very honoured to greet you as your new Chair of the Enactus Australia Board. I have been proud to be a Director since 2009, and look forward to continuing my commitment to Enactus and building a strong relationship with all of our network. This year has certainly been a challenging one all over the world. However, we were fortunate to still participate in the Enactus World Cup which for the first time was held online. Our congratulations go to the winning team Egypt for a very well deserved achievement for their project Chito Shrimp which turns shrimp shells into natural spices and fertilisers. And of course, hearty congratulations also go to our National Champions Macquarie University who did Australia proud at this year's World Cup event. They were outstanding in their preparation, and their project video presentation was very well received and had some great comments and praise from judges across the world. On a national level we will again continue next year with our Regional Showcases which at this stage will most likely be online in April/ May. This is a wonderful opportunity for students and partners to connect at a “grass roots” level and greatly assists our students in preparing for our National Showcase in July. Thanks again to all of our stakeholders for your on-going support of the program here in Australia. As we head into the end of a very challenging year we ask you to consider that we are a small Not for Profit with a very big job to do, and as such we would very much welcome your financial support through the rest of the year leading into 2021. A donation of just $250 per year, or around $20.00 per month is just 2 cups of coffee per week! We very much appreciate any support no matter how big or small. It all makes a difference. Dr Denis Bauer - CSIRO Australia. Facilitator for the discussion on COVID-19 at the World Cup online event. Jo Newton - Enactus International Alumni of the year 2020 Events and Happenings, World Cup and Country Leaders Report The major happening, of course, since our last Newsletter has been the Enactus World Cup which was held online for the first time, from 8 – 11 September 2020. This new format was very well received and allowed more people all over the world to access the online event. The format remained similar to the live event with the emphasis on celebration and collaboration while not taking away from the competition – the corner stone of the World Cup. It was an extremely busy agenda which offered topics and interactive forums which catered to participants and observers from across the Enactus network including business leaders, students, academics, Enactus staff, alumni, family and friends. In all over the 4 days there were over 35 activities which included opportunities for “lounges” where groups could meet. Nine great LEAD Change Panel/Keynote Speaker sessions were held to discuss highly relevant topics including Rethink Plastic, Climate Action, Are the SDGs on Target, COVID 19 Unmasked, The Future of Higher Education, Equality, Future of Food, and the Future of Work. We were delighted that Dr Denis Bauer from CSIRO was one of the facilitators of the discussion on COVID where other countries (including Sweden’s approach to the pandemic, testing regimes and the need for global co-operation) were discussed. Specific sessions were held where students could meet with top executives as well as each other, and the Academic Symposium looking at Enactus related research was also a popular one. The competition itself was of course the “main event” and some amazing projects were presented via video to hundreds of judges from around the world, including 25 from Australia - 13 of whom were alumni. Here in Australia we had some wonderful involvement including: * Two of our Board members Margie Atkinson and Josh Rao were invited to be judges for the Alumni Awards. * Kylie Smith managed the scoring for all Rounds. * Josh Farr conducted spotlight interviews with a range of students throughout the event. * Australia was one of 14 countries to present a Country Spotlight. * Dr Denis Bauer from CSIRO, who facilitated our COVID-19 at the National Showcase was invited as a panellist for the COVID-19 workshop. * Dr Jo Newton from UNE was selected as an Enactus Alumni of the Year Award. We are currently reviewing all our options for our Regional Showcases in April/May 2021 and our National Showcase in July. We’ll keep you posted. Student ActivitiesMacquarie University representing Australia at the online Enactus World Cup 2020 Enactus Macquarie team collecting their National Champion Trophy from KPMG, Sydney. Enactus World Cup 8 - 11 September 2020 Again the main event for the students for this quarter was the Enactus World Cup which was held online for the first time using Launchpad 6. Our National Champions Macquarie University represented Australia in this online event and we were very impressed by their video presentation which was submitted and viewed by judges all over the world. The feedback was very positive and we look forward to seeing the team's projects grow over the coming year. Having this event online for the first time was a great opportunity for all our students from all universities in Australia to join in the event and participate in some of the sessions held on line. There was some really positive feedback from the international event with feedback coming from students , judges and partners alike. We look forward to it being an even bigger and better event next year. The team from Macquarie University was very proud to receive the KPMG National Champions 2020 trophy from our Board member Trent Duvall. We value highly the work they do and their range of projects. As you can see from their faces, they are very happy and proud – as are we all. If you missed it, you can still see their presentation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=my50pTMr6oM The Western Region group of universities met to review progress for the year and start their plans for 2021. Their discussion included reviewing the students’ experience of 2020 Enactus National Showcase - what worked for teams plus any difficulties experienced. They also looked at the focus for students next year, including such things as the SDG Challenge WA, and the Enactus Academic Symposium at the National Showcase and World Cup. The teams from the Southern Region also got together to review their progress during 2020 and focus for 2021. We are excited to welcome Monash University back into the Enactus program for 2021 and look forward to their participation in our events next year. Congratulations to all the teams who have held their AGMs and elected their new management positions for 2021, and thank you to the outgoing teams’ executives for all their great work and contribution during a very difficult year. International NewsRachael Jorosh, CEO Enactus International. Country Leader's Summit October 2020 Enactus International During two weeks of October, Enactus International held our Country Leaders’ Summit. The focus was on reviewing the National Competitions and Enactus World Cup, and deciding on a number of initiatives for growing and developing even more meaningful events and experiences in 2021. Most countries held their national events online using Launch Pad 6, as we did. Feedback was very similar to what we received. Judges were very happy with the online format, as were students, although they did miss the personal connection with students from around the world. Some of the ideas we will be discussing for incorporation into events include: Combining fun and learning for students during their screen time where some events may still have to be online, or a hybrid online and live. This could include interactive opportunities such as gamification Involving students more in creating, running and facilitating sessions . Gaining ongoing involvement from all teams in a country after their national event, with activities or awards which can lead into the World Cup. Ideas such as in country student and faculty awards can be entered into a global award similar to the current Alumni of the Year awards. Outdoor fun activities related to World races, such as “Walk to Reduce Plastic” can be held in every country during the same week leading into World Cup. All Country Leaders will work towards discussing and evaluating these and many more ideas for fun, relevant and global activities to be mirrored around the Enactus world. Our aim is to have as many of our partners and business network be involved as well. The next Country Leaders’ Summit is planned for January 2021.
