A Note From Our Principal

Dear OLV Family,

Fall is officially here! The calendar says fall, the temperatures have cooled a bit, and we are on the cusp of football season again (a COVID safe one, of course). Soon everyone will be indulging in the obligatory “pumpkin spice anything and everything” and we will shift our attention towards the coming holidays.

Curiousity & S.T.E.M. Abound In 4th Grade!

Mrs. Dascher's fourth grade is full of budding scientists and avid learners! See what they have been up to! (Submitted by Mrs. Dascher)

Fourth grade students are shown doing a science investigation called “10-10-10,” meant to help them understand the concepts of criteria and constraint. Students were allotted 10 index cards, 10 cm of tape, and 10 minutes during which they had to construct the tallest structure possible that could support the weight of a book.

At present, 4th graders are studying plant structure and adaptations. The first investigation shows students studying celery stalks that had been soaked in colored water. The second demonstrates the concepts of phototropism and gravitropism—adaptations that help plants survive.

Middle School Football & Cheer

Middle school football and cheer is alive and well! Our team is a young team determined to grow and they are doing a great job of honing their skills and enjoying the camaraderie. Middle school sports is a great avenue to making connections to other schools within the diocese and building friendships that will carry on through high school.

Coaching For Kids

Coaching For Kids is an extracurricular, social emotional after school program. This faith-based program was created by John Carroll graduate Sarah Bailey to promote and teach social and emotional intelligence and to help teach tools and strategies to guide young children through life’s social emotional journeys. With Coaching For Kids' new virtual learning opportunity, classes will be offered to students throughout the Birmingham area.  Specific virtual class times for students attending Diocese of Birmingham Catholic Schools have also been established in hopes that this will also provide a time for our Catholic school students to get to know each other and create community throughout the Diocese.

We have so much to be thankful for at OLV, and so much to be proud of as well.  When we receive updates from our distinguished alumni, we are reminded of the difference that a quality Catholic education can make in the formation of a young adult. In this section, we celebrate the accomplishments and news of our beloved OLV Alumni. If you have any alumni news to share, please send it to alumninews@olvsch.com.

Peter Anella, Tanner Gray, and Hall Welborn (OLV '17)  have started a non-profit organization named The Cool Cat Club aimed at supporting cancer patients. Peter founded the organization, along with his close friends, in memory of his father who lost his battle with cancer last December. The organization provides comfort items such as hats and scarves as well as financial assistance to cancer patients in the local community. The Cool Cat Club recently made their first hospital drop-off at Grandview Cancer Center. The initial drop-off for the organization was covered by local news agencies and can be found here. It is indeed impressive to see these OLV graduates making an impact in the lives of others at such a young age. We are extremely proud of their hard work and outstanding display of Christian values. For more information on The Cool Cat Club and to see how you can help their mission, click the button below.
