Environmental Justice: Haiti Water Project FundedIn our Winter 2020 Newsletter, we announced the Haiti Water Project which aims to provide potable water for a medical clinic and thousands of nearby residents in one of Port-au-Prince's poorest areas, Cité Soleil. With the support of our CEJS donors, Professionals Without Borders, and Rotary Clubs from around the Seattle area, the project has been fully-funded and construction will begin in early 2021! Learn more. The Haiti Water project is one of sixty global service projects that our Seattle University students, staff and faculty have worked on over the past 17 years. Campus Sustainability: National RecognitionFor the third year in a row, Sierra Magazine named Seattle University as one of their Top 20 "Cool Schools". SeattleU also earned a top rating in the Princeton Review's Green College Honor Roll. To help us keep pace in these competitive rankings, the President's Committee for Sustainability recently adopted four sustainability strategic priorities that aim to strengthen SU's national sustainability leadership. Social Sustainability: The BLOCK Project In June, Seattle University engineering students presented their work with the BLOCK Project which seeks low-cost, sustainable solutions for Seattle's homeless. After host properties are identified, the BLOCK team builds portable, healthy housing that provides a safe and stable environment. Learn more. Student Focus: Bullitt Environmental Prize AwardeeThe Bullitt Foundation awarded the 14th annual Bullitt Environmental Prize to Patience Malaba, an environmental justice and affordable housing advocate who immigrated to the United States from Zimbabwe. Malaba is currently enrolled in SU's Master of Public Administration program and will graduate this fall. The prize recognizes young people who overcome adversity and demonstrate environmental leadership. Learn more. Alumni Focus: Alumni Sustainability CoalitionThe recently launched Alumni Sustainability Coalition is an alumni affinity group founded with the intention of bringing SU alumni together around issues of sustainability and environmental justice while strengthening our collective environmental impacts. Faculty Focus: Film and the EnvironmentDr. Benjamín Schultz-Figueroa is an Assistant Professor in Film Studies who researches the history of scientific media, nontheatrical film, and animal studies. Dr. Schultz-Figueroa's classes focus on the intersection of the arts and sciences and include courses on Science and Film, Animals and Film, Animal Representations, and Ecocinema. His forthcoming paper “Things to Come: Teaching Film Studies for our Scientific Future,” considers the challenges and possibilities of teaching interdisciplinary classes in Film Studies and the sciences. His book The Celluloid Specimen: Moving Image Research into Animal Life is scheduled to be published by UC Press in 2022. Campus Sustainability: Greener PrintingManaged Print Services has instituted two initiatives to reduce SU's environmental footprint while reducing expenses. All printing will use 100% post-consumer-waste recycled paper and will automatically be double-sided. We estimate that this policy will save 380 trees, 400 million BTUs of energy, 290,000 pounds of carbon dioxide, 350,000 gallons of water and $4000 per year.
