Links eNewsletter - Term 4 Week 2 Dear valued member of the PLC community, A Message From the Deputy PrincipalThis week, the View Street building has been abuzz with excitement as we prepare for the Visual Arts and Technologies Exhibition: In the Making. The name this year has so many connotations, but it has made me reflect on the fact that our students are always in the process of ‘becoming’ as they grow and gain experience. Our school also continues to strive for growth and development in a range of areas, building on strong foundations. This term, staff in the Junior School have been involved in the culmination of a hugely successful remote evaluation of the Primary Years Programme, conducted by the International Baccalaureate Organisation. This saw so many aspects of Junior School life, not least the considerable efforts of Richard Wright, Katy Howes, Jennifer Rickwood and our dedicated teachers, being celebrated. It also allowed for the articulation of areas where we could look to develop in the future. Because we are always trying to improve and refine what we do for our students, this is exciting and inspiring. As our new Year 12 Leaders take over the reins from their predecessors this week, and our Year 6 students prepare for their Exhibition, we continue to look to the future with excitement. The challenge for teachers as educators is to prepare our students for that future. Earlier in the year, I convened groups of teachers, parents, students and Council members for the Future Proofing PLC Workshops. At the end of this process, we determined that we needed to educate students in a range of specific skills to equip them for the future and enable them to be successful. These skills included their ability to connect with one another and with their community, to think critically and creatively, to demonstrate qualities of self-leadership (such as resilience, purposefulness and adaptability) and to be global actors, developing empathy, inclusivity and proactivity among other things. While many of our students are already demonstrating a range of these skills and dispositions, the challenge before us is to ascertain how we can actively teach and measure their development in these areas as part of our curriculum. In this regard, our students and curriculum are very much in the making and our challenge is being able to quantify and chart their progress. This is exciting and calls for bravery in our approach as we develop our teaching and learning strategy in the coming terms. As a school, we always aspire to be dynamic, preparing students for life in an evolving world by trying to ensure they are equipped with the necessary skills to meet the future head-on. As life-long learners, we are always in the making and it is this that makes education such an exciting and invigorating area to work in. I do hope you will have the opportunity to visit In the Making this week and the Year 6 Exhibition on Tuesday. I encourage you to enjoy the creativity and ingenuity on show and invite you to join me in feeling optimistic for the future. - Neil Walker – Deputy Principal (Teaching and Learning) War CriesThis morning at the Junior School Assembly, we were thoroughly entertained by the House War Cries. If you want to know which was the winning House, then you'll have to watch the video. Inter-house Athletics CarnivalIt was with great disappointment that we decided to cancel the Inter-house Athletics Carnival on Tuesday. Considering the conditions on the day, this decision was definitely prudent! Term 4 is such a busy time in the life of the School. For example, in the next few weeks, we have Open Garden Day, Year 6 Exhibition, two JIGSSA Carnivals, a performance of Matilda for our Year 4s, Allwell Testing, and Remembrance Day, all of this on top of our incursions and excursions. We then need availability at venues and of Physical Education staff. We are also investigating conducting a Team Games Event. Year 6 ExhibitionThe entire community is invited to the Year 6 Exhibition, to be held on Tuesday 26 October from 6.00 pm in the Swim and Recreation Centre (SRC). The Exhibition is the culmination of the Primary Years Programme (PYP), and each student has led their own inquiry. The topics are as diverse as our students. If you are interested in one of the significant markers in the life of the School, I encourage you to attend the Exhibition. Late ArrivalsWe all have things that slow us down in the morning, especially when we are preparing small children for the day ahead! If you are running late, can I please request that students enter the school through main Junior School Reception. This will minimise disruption to the classes that are already in session. Year 4 Sustainable Clothes SwapOn Friday, Year 4 held their annual Sustainable clothes Swap day where students brought in clothes they no longer wanted and set up a shop. Students were then able to "purchase" a range of clothes, shoes, and accessories. - Richard Wright – Head of Junior School Year 6 Exhibition

Year 12 Valedictory Service & Dinner HighlightsLast Thursday night, we were fortunate enough to celebrate the Class of 2021 with a wonderful Valedictory Service and Dinner. Please enjoy the below highlights video of the evening. Activities with Scotch CollegeOn Tuesday night, we had the annual Year 7 PLC Scotch Quiz night. The PLC and Scotch students joined forces to form quiz teams. The night was full of laughter and energy as they battled out to be crowned the overall winner – there was even a two up competition! I couldn’t be more impressed with the way our students embraced this opportunity and I hope it helped form new friendships across the two schools. Later this term we look forward to the activity afternoon our Year 8 students will have with Scotch College. Information about this event has been sent to Year 8 parents and guardians. Creative Arts and Technology ExhibitionTonight, we have the opening of our Creative Arts and Technology Exhibition: In the Making. The View Street building has been transformed into a gallery with work being shown from all areas of the Creative Arts and Technology subject areas. I have been so impressed with the standard of the work, particularly that of our graduating class. They truly are a creative group of students and it is lovely to see so many students involved in this exhibition Induction Service for the 2022 Student LeadersOn Monday, we inducted our new Leaders for 2022. This year, we recognised each student in the Class of 2022 as a leader, as well as those students who have a formal leadership position. The Class of 2022 have embraced their role as leaders and it has been fantastic to see how many of them have already come up with ideas and initiatives to help make PLC an even more enjoyable place for all years. They have big shoes to fill now that the Class of 2021 has been officially farewelled and I have no doubt that they are up to the challenge. Missing Photos From the Year 12 Final AssemblyIt has come to our attention that there were a number of photos missing from the Gallery for the Year 12 Final Assembly. This was due to a technical glitch in the uploading process and we apologise for any inconvenience. These have now all been uploaded and are accessible in the Gallery by clicking the button. - Rebecca Watts – Head of Senior School Year 11 (Year 12 in 2022) Mothers & Daughters Breakfast

Beginning with a Bang! What a fantastic start to Term 4. The Years 9 and 10 students have thoroughly enjoyed their trips to Cottesloe Beach on Friday for fish and chips with a sunset view as well as our Year 7s enjoying lawn bowls with St Hildas in Mosman Park. On Saturday, our Year 11s, along with Ms Edwards and Darcie, made a sensational effort for their leg of Quay2Quay walking from Cottesloe to Victoria Quay in Fremantle. Along the walk, they did many team bonding activities including an appreciative inquiry about the impact they wish to have on the Boarding House as the graduating class of 2022. We are so excited to implement some of their fantastic and achievable ideas. Younger years were also able to enjoy some shopping at Claremont Quarter on Sunday as well as nail art, impromptu table tennis competitions, and various spontaneous trips throughout the weekend. This weekend, our girls can look forward to shopping in Perth City, more bonfires with Scotch College, and fish and chips at Cottesloe Beach for alternating year groups. The Year 10s have their leg of Quay2Quay, the Year 7s a quiz night with Scotch College on Tuesday, as well as hosting a sports night on the weekend. There is also a much-anticipated trip to the Swan Valley for strawberry picking for all our girls. This coming Wednesday, we will also have our prefecture handover, where our current Year 12 Leaders will formally pass the baton to our newly appointed 2022 Leaders. We look forward to the adventures to come. - Katherine Hazlewood – Deputy of Wellbeing and Pastoral Care Birthing Kits Service Opportunity Year 7 – 11 – Extended to Sunday 24 OctoberThis is the third year that PLC is participating in the Birthing Kits for Australia (BKFA) project led by IB CAS students. This year, it is being led by Year 11 students, Antigone and Alice. Birthing kits are small packages containing seven fundamental items for women in developing countries, to have a safe and sanitary birth. The not-for-profit NGO offer volunteers to either donate or build birthing kits, which BKFA then sends to particular countries around the world that are less economically developed and have high maternal mortality rates due to unsanitary births. The organisation’s goal aligns directly with the UN’s Goal #3: Good Health & Wellbeing - By 2030, reduce the global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100,000 live births. Since their foundation in 1995 by Joy O’Dazy and the Adelaide Hills Zonta club, they have been very successful in their efforts, distributing over 2 million kits in 2019. Students interested in getting involved in this project will need to:
