School Drone Program Targets Girls in ScienceSurf Life Saving NSW’s Australian UAV Service (AUAVS) in partnership with She Maps has launched a drone program for school students in Years 5-9 in NSW and the ACT, with a focus on getting more girls involved in engineering and technology. Rescue of Four People Recognised with State AwardOff-duty surf lifesavers and lifeguards who stood up together to save four lives in a successful coordinated rescue effort on the Central Coast have been awarded the Surf Life Saving NSW Rescue of the Month award for February in recognition of their achievements.
Mum's the Word on PatrolA small south coast surf club believes it may have something no other club has - five mother and daughter combinations on the same patrol. Over the last few seasons the Kiama Downs SLSC mums have inspired each other to train as lifesavers and get their Bronze Medallions and they are now inspiring a new generation in their daughters who have their Surf Rescue Certificates and patrolled this season. Vale Keith 'Cocky' CaldwellIt is with sadness that Surf Life Saving NSW learned of the passing of Bulli SLSC President and Life Member Keith 'Cocky' Caldwell. Keith was also awarded Life Membership at Branch, State and National level and provided an outstanding contribution to the Surf Life Saving movement. SLSNSW extends our condolences to Keith’s family, friends and the Bulli SLSC community. He will be greatly missed. International Water Safety Day: Babar's StoryOn International Water Safety Day (15 May) Surf Life Saving NSW launched Babar’s Story to mark the annual day of water safety awareness. The video takes viewers on a coastal experience that is shared by many inexperienced visitors to the beach. Babar’s Story aims to teach our communities that beach safety starts at home. Kiama Downs Dominates First Round of IRB SeriesThe first IRB (Inflatable Rescue Boat) racing event in two years kicked off in perfect conditions at Terrigal earlier this month. Over 300 surf lifesavers from 17 clubs travelled to the Central Coast location for the first round of the 2021 Sharkskin NSW IRB Premiership Series. National Volunteer Week: The Hard Yakka WorkforceEach year for the last five years there is a group of about 130 hard yakka Swansea Belmont club members who don their bright green t-shirts to bring the State Championships to life. They’re at the beach well before dawn and are picking up the last piece of rubbish and pulling down the final roller door after the last competitor has driven back over the Belmont bridge. Registered Clubs Recognised for Contributions to CommunitiesProud partner of Surf Life Saving NSW, ClubsNSW celebrated the contributions of registered clubs from across the state on Thursday 20 May at the 2021 Clubs & Community Awards. The first award of the evening, Fostering Grassroots Sport, was awarded to The Sutherland District Trade Union Club (Tradies) for their support of Elouera SLSC through the Surf Awareness Clinic.
